U.S. Marathon Olympic Trials

Two of the fastest races in Olympic Marathon Trials history took place on the same day in Houston as the six men and women who will represent Team USA in London earned their way on the squad. Shalane Flanagan set an Olympic Trials record of 2:25:38 in only her second marathon, while Meb Keflezighi earned his third Olympic berth by winning the Trials in a personal best time of 2:09:08. -  http://www.runningnetwork.com/RNW/index.php/news/marathons/3518--keflezighi-flanagan-win-us-olympic-team-trials-marathon

On The Run with Matt McGowan

As another year ends and a New Year begins, one can always look back to numerous positive happenings as well as the sad ones we experienced. I am sure we all know people who had a tough 2011 either with their health or work situation. If you know someone having a tough time, maybe you can do something to make their life better.

Keeping Track by Rod O’Donnell

Dear Jesse –

Thought that I would drop you a line to let you know what is going on down here. Before I fill you in, I wanted to tell you that you have always been my hero. Not just because you set four world records in a span of 45 minutes at the Big Ten Championships. Not just because you stood up to one of the most evil men in history and proved that his absurd Aryan Race Theory was totally false. http://www.runohio.com/index.php/news/215-keeping-track

Updated - Last month the Cleveland school board voted to use savings from a new contract with teachers to head off elimination of preschool, spring sports and busing for high school students. Track will be one of the programs saved.

Rambling Football Bowl Games Costing Olympics Sports?

has the expense of going to a college football bowl game (with 70 of the 120 Division I Football Bowl Subdivision teams going to a bowl game)  and the athletic department’s effort to put more money into some programs resulted in Olympic sports to be eliminated at many universities?

” So why do many think the system is broken? The reason is simple: Schools are losing money — a lot of money — by going to these bowl games.”

”The University of Connecticut played in the 2011 Fiesta Bowl had a net loss of approximately $1.7 million”

“Ohio University, 2006 GMAC Bowl: Former Nebraska coach Frank Solich led Ohio to its first bowl appearance since 1968. The celebration in Athens, however, was short-lived. A $277,550 bowl deficit was more than an athletic department already awash in red ink. The university was forced to dip into general reserve funds to pay the bowl tab and just weeks after the game the school dropped men’s track and field, swimming and lacrosse”
