Healthy Food Choices for Budget-Conscious Seniors

Eating well as you age is important on so many levels. Many chronic health conditions that plague older Americans, including heart disease, diabetes, joint pain, cancer, and even digestive problems, are the result of poor eating habits and excess weight. The National Institute on Aging's article Eating Well As You Get Older

delves into the many benefits of healthy eating and the benefits it offers to aging seniors. So how can you balance the need for quick, affordable meals while making sure you are eating nutritious, balanced food that can give you the energy you need to be active and healthy? Visit our blog to find out!
Super Sweet Potato

Need a simple and healthy swap to get more nutritional punch out of dinner? Substitute a sweet potato for your normal potato. Sweet potatoes are one of the best sources of vitamin A, which is an antioxidant praised for its anti-cancer and anti-aging properties as well as the role it plays in promoting healthy vision. You can bake them in the oven (or pop it in the microwave) and top with pecans and cinnamon. Cut it into cubes and toss with olive oil and sea salt and bake at 375 degrees until tender for sweet potato "fries," or try pureeing a couple of boiled sweet potatoes with some almond milk, a little brown sugar and cinnamon for a creamy soup.

February is American Heart Month
graphic-heart.gif
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. During a month filled with images of paper hearts and romantic love, let's turn our focus to our real hearts and cardiovascular health. What better way is there to say "I love you" than committing to a heart-healthy lifestyle?

You can make healthy changes to lower your risk of developing heart disease. Controlling and preventing risk factors is also important for people who already have heart disease. To lower your risk:

  • Watch your weight.
  • Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke.
  • Control your cholesterol and blood pressure.
  • If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.
  • Get active and eat healthy.
