MCC Academy Library Full of Changes This Year

We have transformed part of our library into a cozy reading area complete with beanbags and couches for children to enjoy listening to stories during library time. In addition, we have created a "Dr. Sues Wall" in that area of the library to enhance their reading experience. In another section of the library, a pre-school/pre-k section has been created with activity tables, board books, cushions, and toys for younger children to enjoy. As always, we are grateful to the many volunteers who made all of this possible. A special thanks goes out to to interior designers, Haniyyah Siddique and Nazneen Ayoob, for their collaborative designs for the library, as well as Nabila Vadaria for her diligence of inputting our library collection into our new electronic system. Do stop by and see the wonderful new library at MCC Academy!

Annual History Bee Creates Yet More Buzz

The National History Bee is a nationwide competition. The first phase of it involves the entire middle school taking a fifty question multiple choice exam.  Students with the ten highest scores compete in the school-wide History Bee. This year these ten students were: Irsyad Adam, Havva Alver, Maaz Shaikh, Aayaan Shaikh, Muhammad Abdulaziz Khan, Wiaam Aggoun, Adam Yousef, Haroon Salahuddin, Ashar Hashmi, and Omar Siddiqui.  After answering a great deal of rigorous questions spanning ancient, modern, American, and world history, three winners emerged. The third place winner was Aayaan Shaikh from 7a. The second place winner was Haroon Salahuddin. And the first place champion was Ashar Hashmi. Both students are from 6a. Also, all three students took an online national exam and ended up qualifying for regionals. They will be competing with other schools to qualify for the state competition. Congratulations to all.

Nasheed Club Performing Nearly 12 Years

The MCC Academy Nasheed Cub was formed almost 12 years ago. It has grown from a small group of 10 children to almost 25 this year. Students from 1-5 grades participate in this club. They sing Islamic songs and perform at different MCC programs. They meet every Tuesday from 4-4:20 P.M. in room 302. Already this school year, participants have performed at the Annual Muslim Community Center (MCC) Dinner, which was held last November. They also joined in with a choir at the Thanksgiving Interfaith service held at MEC in Morton Grove. Also, once a month, they perform in assembly. These days they are practicing to perform at the MCC Academy Annual Dinner on Saturday, February 21. Please join us to witness this beautiful event.

Miss Irum Sheikh - Islamic Studies

In addition to learning the Duas of everyday activities, first-graders in 1B are also learning the etiquettes of sleeping, waking, eating, and interacting with others that are all derived from the Sunnah of the Prophet (S). The more First-graders know the Sunnah, the better!

Mrs. Sheikh - 2A
My second-graders have been busy after they came back from their winter break. Our class Spelling Bee was held on January 9. All children showed enthusiasm and practiced for this event. My top three winners are Zahra Akram(1st place), Alisha Rafique(2nd place), Mohamed Chabou(3rd place),and Sobia Shetawala(runner-up). In reading, students learned about schools around the world and they compared MCC Academy to other schools. In math, students have enjoyed learning estimation and rounding numbers to nearest 10.

My young scientists explored the importance and use of natural resources (soil, rocks, and water). To commemorate Martin Luther King Day, children watched a documentary on Brain Pop and wrote how they would like to see the world (This is displayed on the bulletin board in the classroom).
To add some fun, children made snowmen and wrote about their experiences of a snowy day, which is displayed outside the classroom.
I wish good luck to all my spelling bee contestants and all my second graders are winners as they worked really hard practicing for the class Spelling Bee.

Mrs. Saleh - Middle School Science

Led by Middle School Science Teacher Mrs. Abeer Saleh, our 8th grade students did an amazing job writing and acting out their original Islamic Scientist plays on Friday, January 30, at both campuses. Parents and students enjoyed these performances and certainly learned a lot about many of history's esteemed Muslim scientists' discoveries and contributions to so many different fields.

Mrs. Humayoun - 4B

1 2 3 Action! Ms. Humayoun's 4th grade class has been very busy with presentations. Students worked very hard on their Explorer project which was assigned during winter break. The objective was to research an assigned explorer and their contribution to the world. Students went above and beyond with their presentations

We are writers! Students keep a daily journal at school. They are given either story starters or prompts that encourages their creativity to surface. Students have writing wonderful stories with dialogue and figurative language! On Fridays we all look forward to sharing and listening to a variety of pieces.

Mrs. Pathan - 4A
It's been a great winter thus far. Before winter break, students created neon snowflakes and 3-D snowmen. To finish our science animal adaptations, students completed an activity on animals. They colored their animals with shredded magazines and wrote about their adaptations. For social studies, we ended our chapter with students completing a producer consumer project during gym time. Girls and boys from both fourth grade classrooms were grouped up together. They invented a product keeping supply, demand and profit in mind. Groups will be presenting their project next week. Finally, MCC Academy 4th-graders hosted Poetry Pals at the Morton Grove campus. Chicago Jewish Day School and Sacred Heart Catholic school came to visit the masjid, create poems, and make new friends. MCCA was very excited and cannot wait until they visit Chicago Jewish Day School in about two weeks!

Miss Malik - 1A

In social studies, we finished our unit on communities.  We learned about different aspects of the communities we live in. A good portion of our unit focused on the importance of leaders in our community.  This led us into a discussion of one of the most important leaders from our country's history, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We read several books about him and learned how he helped changed the world we live in today. We also had the chance to listen to his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.  After listening, as a class, we came up with our own dreams for the future.

Ibrahim Arif's mom came in and read "A Snowy Day" to us.  After she read to us she helped us create a snowy day picture using a variety of different kinds of paper to show texture in our work.

We're looking forward to beginning our unit on animals in science.  Each one of us will get to become an expert on an animal.

Mrs. Malik - Preschool

Our Cultural Week was a big unit for our Preschoolers. We celebrated Cultural Week for two weeks. The children learned all about many different countries, languages, foods, money, flags, and clothing. We had many different activities taking place in our classroom. The greatest part of this annual event is always the parent involvement within our classroom. It could not have been possible without our parents' great participation.

Children presented their beautiful culture books to the class, and we also learned a lot about the different families and their cultures.

A special thanks to the parents who came and shared their cultures with our students. It was a great experience for the children to see their parents involved in the class. I really appreciate the time and effort that you dedicated for our students.

Mrs. Nabeel - 1C

News from Mrs. Nabeel's Pond! :)

Reading: Poets in the Making! After reading multiple poems about winter, my reading group wrote poems about winter. Students shared what they enjoy best about winter using their five senses. We wrote our Book Reports using fiction text. We learned how to identify the main characters, setting and plot in the story.

Math Centers: We have been enjoying our new math centers. One of our new math station is the Snow Ball Machine where students practice their addition skills by adding the snowballs together.

Social Studies: 1-C's Community Project! We have been learning about communities. We learned the different types of communities such as a city, town and farm as well as the places and people in the community. We created a model of our community to show the places and people in our communities. I am so proud of the students for their creativity and eye for details. (The Community Model is located in the 1st grade hallway by the staircase.)

We also learned about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We watched a Brainpop Video as well as read a few books and articles about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to learn how he changed the world. To help students get a better understanding of how things were unfair we did multiple stimulations. The two that resonated the most with the students were when only certain students were allowed to get a drink of water such as the students with only black shoes or only white shoes as well as when we reenacted Rosa Parks and how the Bus Boycott came to be that help change the laws.

Spelling Bee: Congratulations to our Spelling Bee champions. Our Spelling Bee champions: Abdurrahman (1st grade), Zakaria (2nd place) and Raihan (3rd place) did a frog-tastic job representing 1-C in the first grade spelling bee. We are so proud of you!

Class Celebration: We reached our goal of filling Mr. Speckles belly with over 100 flies. We celebrated our achievement with a short movie and popcorn. Keep up the great work!

Mrs. Kurtovic - PreK-A

This month in Pre-K A, we are learning letter recognition, letter sounds, how to skip count by 10's to 100, how to read 3-letter words, write letters A-K and numbers 1-10. The recent alphabet letter we learned and practiced writing was letter L. We made an art project in reference to letter L by making ladybugs. Pre-K A students love writing, and they practice writing by writing their names, alphabet, sight words, and numbers. This month we had a lot of fun learning about penguins. We even tried to imitate how penguins waddle!! Pre-K A students made their own quilt using the alphabet letters and numbers while referencing the book called Cassie's Word Quilt.

Coach Kadir - Boys Basketball

Going into the season we had to focus on our goal of defending our two, back-to-back championships. It wasn't an easy task whatsoever because every other team's goal this year was to beat MCC Academy. There were many ups and downs throughout the season but we stuck together as a family. We won together and lost together. AlhumdilAllah, we played really well and finished with an 8-2 season and took home 2nd place in the Southwest Conference.

Ms. Bozai - 2C

Congratulations to our Spelling Bee classroom winners: Sumaiya Noman, Faizan Ali, and Adil Khan! We are so proud of you!
We are learning about biographies in reading class, most recently about Hellen Keller. We are enthralled with her story and have been discussing how many blessings we have to be grateful to Allah for!
In math class, we are learning about money. It's fun to figure out the value of cash and coins and how to exchange them.
In science class, we are learning about the Earth's natural resources and how we use them every day. This has been another great opportunity to discuss the miracles of Allah and his many blessing to us.
A special "Thank You!" to Nazneen Ayoob who did a beautiful art project with us this week. May Allah reward all of our generous families and bless them with all the happiness in the world! Ameen.

Mrs. Shariff- KgA

Alhamdullilah, the past few weeks in KG-A have been filled with lots of learning and excitement!  In reading, we are extending our lessons on long vowel sound words and exploring many stories that talk about the different seasons and the changes that take place.  One of the most important aspects that our KG-A students are working on is the art of reading and writing. For reading, our kids continue to read at their ability levels; some have even started taking the AR test. For writing, we had initially started off writing simple sentences as part of our journal writing activity. Now our students have moved on to writing simple stories, that focus on beginning, middle, and the end, to enhance their creativity.

In social studies, we are wrapping up our Neighborhood Unit by creating a 3-D project with the help of one of our parents, Mrs. Chabou.  Our students had the opportunity to put together a piece that allowed our students to get creative and design their own neighborhood.  We also had an opportunity to learn a little about Martin Luther King Jr. and the important role he played in our country.

For art, our students have made snow globes and snowmen! As you can see, our students have been busy with fun-filled enriching activities!

Mrs. Motiwala - 1B
In writing, my first graders had a chance to share what they liked most about winter. We couldn't go outside because it was too cold so we decided to turn our writing into an art project and write about what we enjoy doing in the winter!

We discussed the importance of goal-setting. Each child had a chance to set a personal goal and an educational goal. Come check out our goals!

During our "Buddies" time, first-graders and fourth-graders discussed the importance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Then, they thought of dreams of their own that could help make the world a better place.
