From the Principal's Notepad

Dear Parents,

As Catholic Schools Week winds down, we begin to prepare for next year, while still firmly rooted in this school year. As we reflect on both the routine and preparation, we are reminded of hearing the same parables as the Apostles, but unlike the Apostles, we are trying to hear and explore the parables with fresh ears, minds and hearts.

The feast of St. Thomas Aquinas fell during Catholic Schools Week. As we move forward in our daily lives, St. Thomas reminds us to set aside our many distractions to focus on not only hearing God's Word, but also reflecting on how each of us can best act on God's Word in order to benefit all. Using this simple practice, we can do great things together; growing in Faith, love and community making the ordinary extraordinary.

At St. Francis, our community continues to grow and do extraordinary things. Congratulations to Latin and Drama. Latin competed at Regionals and continued their winning tradition earning over 70 awards. The Beowulf Players performed "Murder is Business and Business is Booming", a play written, directed and performed entirely by our Thespians.

Congratulations also to Cheerleading, the Boys and Girls basketball and soccer teams as they finish their seasons and head for post-season play. And "job well done" kudos to all those students on the 1st and 2nd Honor Rolls - that's 59% of the St. Francis student body.

Please remember to return your re-registration paperwork. It's easy. Just make any changes in red and return it by Friday, February 6 to help us save you fifty dollars. Another item of interest will be courses available online offered in cooperation with the University of Florida. These concurrent/dual enrolled courses will be available to our Juniors and Seniors who meet the enrollment criteria. Specific details will arrive to us in April.

Other upcoming events to look for are: the Diocesan Youth Rally (February 8); Spanish Club Regional competition (February 7); Lent; Junior Ring Mass (February 25); and the Eucharistic Congress (March 7 and 8).

In making the ordinary extraordinary, we want to thank Bishop Estevez for being with us and celebrating Mass on both January 27 and 28. Bishop Estevez was an inspiration to us all as he stayed here with us to celebrate with the St. Francis community and others as his mother passed on to be with our Lord. Thank you, Bishop. A huge "thank you" to Jennifer Maris, Elena Mitchell, Sabrina Harris and our Souper Fun Sunday committee for another outstanding event.

This month's featured faculty member is Mrs. Lisa Garcia.  Mrs. Garcia came to St. Francis by way of Lakeland, Florida where she was the Faith Formation and Marriage Preparation Coordinator and Youth Ministry Associate for Resurrection parish for 6 years. Prior to working at Resurrection parish, Mrs. Garcia taught Special Education for four years. Mrs. Garcia earned both her Bachelors and Masters in Education from the University of Florida. Thank you, Lisa, for your commitment to St. Francis.

    Peace,

    Ernie Herrington
