Intergenerational Books & Bites
The Book Blossoms & DOROT
Date/Time: Wednesday, February 17, 10:30am - noon
Location: DOROT, 171 West 85th Street, off Amsterdam Avenue
Please join DOROT for a special intergenerational event during the February school break. Youth in 1st and 2nd grade will come together with DOROT seniors for a morning of reading and fun activities. Participants will read aloud the book
Yoko by Rosemary Wells and discuss the major theme of the book - respecting one another's differences. Great activities including sushi rolling will follow.
Ages: Youth in 1st and 2nd grade. Due to limited space, parents/guardians may not be able to attend the program but are welcome to wait at DOROT.

Make Valentine's and Care Kits for Women & Children

Sanctuary for Families is the leading nonprofit agency in New York State dedicated exclusively to serving the needed of domestic violence victims, sex trafficking victims, and their children. Sanctuary envisions a world in which freedom from gender violence is a basic human right. Valentine's Day can be a difficult time for victims of gender-based violence who are living in shelters. It is often a reminder of the violence that brought them to Sanctuary. Receiving valentines from those who care is a wonderful gift! Write an inspirational message, make cards, or include wrapped candy - whatever your heart desires! Sanctuary for Families is also in need of "Care Kits" for both adults and children. Care Kits consist of ziplock bags filled with basic travel-sized toiletry essentials (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, hand sanitizer, etc). Please also add a note of encouragement and friendship to each bag! This is a great project to do with kids on a rainy day.

Share the Love! Valentine's Day Pajama and Stuffed Animal Drive
Family-to-Family
Date/Time: All donations should be received by February 13

[email protected] and they'll link you with a shelter near your home. Or you can check their
website for locations where you can send your donations.
New pajamas and a snuggly stuffed animal can make a child living in poverty feel special and secure. Consider sending one new pair of pajamas, any size, along with a new stuffed animal and a Valentine's Day card, to an American child living in poverty in one of the communities Family-to-Family serves. When purchasing pajamas, please buy those that meet federal safety regulations. Family-to-Family, Inc. is a nonprofit, national poverty and hunger relief organization.

Host a birthday party for children living in shelter
Celebrate U
Location: Henry Street Settlement, 605 FDR Drive or 130 Baruch Place
Ittelson Center, 5050 Iselin Avenue, Riverdale, NY
Two 15-year-old girls, Chase Kauder and Talia Eskenazi, founded The Celebrate U Foundation. Celebrate U hosts, organizes and manages birthday parties for children in shelters or who can't afford to celebrate their birthday in the New York City area. Early education is essential, but so is building a child's self esteem, giving them hope for a bright future and knowing society cares about them. Celebrate U partners with nationally known social service agencies for bi-monthly birthday celebrations. Corporate sponsors provide treats and party gifts. A training session will take place one week prior to each event.
Ages: Children in 6th grade and older may participate alone; 5th graders and younger may participate if accompanied by a parent
Time Commitment: Two hours, plus ½ hour training session

Annual Toiletry Drive in support of Valentine's Party for Homeless Women
Brooklyn Community Services
Date/Time: All donations must be made by Friday, February 12
Location: Deliver all donations to BCS Headquarters, downtown Brooklyn, 285 Schermerhorn Street, weekdays between 9 am - 5 pm
Please drop off new, unopened toiletries at the front desk of BCS Headquarters. Items should include: shampoo, conditioner, soap, body wash, face wash, feminine hygiene products, loofahs, moisturizer, lotion, makeup remover, cotton puffs, tissue boxes, makeup bags, lip balm. Hotel or travel-size items are the perfect contribution. Please do not include any shaving razors. The items collected make a real difference to the homeless women served by BCS, who come into the shelter with very few personal possessions. All donated items will be included in gift bags distributed at the annual Valentine's Day Party held on February 14th.

Donate Colorful and Cheerful Drawings

Young children are prolific artists, especially when they are stuck inside during the colder months. If you have a little Picasso and are wondering what to do with all their masterpieces, consider sending them to Color A Smile. Color A Smile collects hundreds of drawings created by children each month, and distributes them to Meals on Wheels programs, nursing homes, hospitals and individuals who are in need of a smile. Follow some
simple guidelines, package the artwork together, ship it to Color A Smile, and they will make sure it gets into the hands of a person who needs cheering. You need not register for this activity
- Use 8.5 x 11 white paper
- Use crayons or colored paper
- Avoid glitter and glue
- Avoid using phrases like "Feel better" or "Get Well"
- Do not put a date on the drawing
- Ask children to sign just FIRST name and age on the drawing
- Use one side of paper only
- Make sure the drawings are bright and happy!

Two exciting Youth Internship Opportunities!
The Baby Buggy Youth Service Corps - Spring Session
The Baby Buggy Youth Service Corps is an opportunity for high school students to participate in hands-on volunteer projects, build leadership skills, and engage with their community through service and action. The Youth Service Corps meets once a week for one hour for eight consecutive weeks at the Baby Buggy Warehouse. The first session will include an orientation, tour of their warehouse, an overview of the project and a brief video. At the end of the eight weeks participants will receive a Certificate of Completion. Please note, to receive the certificate students must attend seven out of the eight sessions.

Dorot Teen Internship Program - Summer 2016
DOROT's Summer Teen Internship Program offers two 4-week sessions for high school students entering 10th grade through graduating seniors. Through a competitive process, Dorot chooses up to 18 interns for each session. Summer interns are also expected to volunteer with DOROT during the academic high school year. Interns who are entering college will volunteer during college breaks. Each morning interns gather together at DOROT for their daily assignments. The first day of each session will include an orientation and training. On Thursdays the interns gather for lunch, group reflection and occasional guest speakers.
Teen Interns may:
- Visit seniors in their home for companionship
- Teach seniors how to use a computer, iPad, iShuffle, and other types of technology
- Celebrate seniors' birthdays
- Deliver meals to seniors
- Send birthday cards out to seniors
- Read to visually impaired seniors
- Shop and deliver groceries to seniors
- Play chess, cards, scrabble, and other games with seniors
- Assist with office work at DOROT
- Have the opportunity to plan, run and implement an intergenerational game day or museum trip
- Visit DOROT's Homelessness Prevention Program and take part in cooking a meal for the seniors who live in our transitional housing facility
