Did You Know?
The Veterans Memorial Plaque on the entrance sign to Ada Roberts Wallace Concourse was referenced in a recent issue of the Chronicle.  One of the veterans listed on the plaque, Kenneth Howe, was one of the first Scouts and Raiders, the forerunners of today’s Navy Seals, and his name is first on the list at the Navy Seal Memorial list at the Navy Seal Museum in Florida.

Kenneth E. Howe graduated from Culver-Stockton in 1940. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Howe, of Holiday, Missouri. A good athlete, “Rip” was captain of the Wildcat basketball team in 1938-39. He had been teaching since his graduation and was on the faculty of a junior high school in Hannibal, Missouri, when he enlisted in the Navy.

As an Ensign, Rip was one to receive the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism and distinctive service in action during the assault on and occupation of French Morroco in November, 1942. Rip was reported missing in action on December 30, 1942, while on a secret mission in the Mediterranean area.
