Wiggly, Squirmy, Noisy, Inquisitive Kids in Worship? Yes!

At Burke UMC, we stand behind our welcome statement that ALL are welcome to worship here and that includes your kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, any and all children that are loved by you...   On Sunday mornings, we offer a variety of ways to involve children in worship and  Sunday School.  If you haven't noticed our Children's Worship Center just past the Sanctuary doors, I invite you to take a peek.  There are ten Activity Buckets on the shelves filled with ten items - four unique bookmarks, small notebook, crayons, coloring sheet, plastic weaving, wooden cross, and a small plush bear that are designed to engage and teach children as they participate in worship alongside adults.  We've carefully thought out instructions on how to utilize the Activity Bucket items throughout the service. Children ages 4 through 2nd grade have the opportunity to attend Children's Church each week during the  9:00AM service and at  10:30AM on Family Worship Sundays.  Children's Church time is spent hearing a Bible story (often the same lesson that Pastor Jason is preaching about!), playing a game, and completing a craft.  Children also have a chance to share their joys and concerns and connect with one another and their leader in a caring, loving, and faith-based environment.

Upper Elementary student and older are encouraged to pick up a "Buzz Words" card from the Children's Worship Center on Family Worship Sundays.  During the sermon, we challenge these students to write down 10 "buzz words" that they hear mentioned.  Everyone who plays gets a prize at the end of the worship service! "The Buzzer" will meet you in the Narthex with a prizes or treat!  There are also Sermon Notes for Kids that's a worksheet to fill in during the sermon.  Both of these resources help children pay attention and practive active listening skills.

Middle and high school students also have the opportunity to actively engage in the worship service. Index cards are available at the Children's Worship Center for older students to write a prayer request or jot down notes to share in  Sunday School the following week. You can also draw and image of something you heard during the sermon and turn in to a member of the Education Team.

For kids of any age who might have a little more trouble focusing their attention and sitting still for an hour-long service, we have a basket of
"I Spy" bean bags that may be utilized during worship.  The bean bags are filled with dozens of small objects that need to be manipulated by the child in order to see them. They work well for children who need a diversion from other activities.

We want you and your children in worship each week and don't want you to worry about whether they're behaving appropriately or not.   Children of all ages are welcome in the Sanctuary and are encouraged to participate in age-appropriate ways.  Our goal is to give you the tools and the peace of mind that you're doing the right thing and that you're in the right place.  Hope to see you (and the little people you love)  on Sunday!

The Life Youth Fellowship

Youth Ministry

"If your parents read to you as a child, take one step forward."
"If one or both of your parents is in jail, take two steps back."
"If you intend to go to college take two steps forward.  If you have dropped out of school, take one step back."

Youth responded to these statements based on a description of a youth on the card they were given.  After several such statements were posed, the youth found themselves divided into 2 large sections on either side of the room and one small section in the middle of the room.  This visual helped show the youth where society is today. There is a large group of youth with loving, stable homes, good education, and an abundance of opportunities.  There is also a large group of youth living in broken homes, food insecure, not attending school regularly with little opportunity.

BUMC member, Anne Schoolcraft works with at risk teens at the Maya Angelou Charter School in Washington DC.  She spent time sharing with our youth group what life is like for those teens.  The group put together toiletry kits to be distributed at the school.  We look forward to partnering with Anne in the future to help provide additional needs for those students.

The Youth Group continues its Second  Sunday  Service in February with a planning session with Jane Wilson.  We will make plans for the youth participation in Change the World  Sunday  and start to lay out ideas for our local summer camp.

Middle school youth and leaders will attend Journey Weekend,  March 17-19 .  This spiritual retreat in Goshen, VA is put on by Jeremiah Project. It promises to be high energy, uplifting and encouraging to youth in their walk with Jesus. See Anne Sawin to sign up.

Please keep our 18 confirmands and their mentors in your prayers as they take this Journey that is Confirmation.

Anne Sawin
Interim Youth Ministries Coordinator

Rising Hope

Rising Hope is an essential mission of the United Methodist Church in the Alexandria District and beyond.  Unique in its ministry, Rising Hope witnesses to a fundamental passion of the Wesleyan movement since its inception: ministering with and to the least, the lost, and the lonely of the community.

Since its founding in 1996, Rising Hope's mission has been to bring the "power of Christ and the support of the church to the community living in poverty south of Alexandria, VA along the Route 1 Corridor. The ministry could not have begun or continued without the support and involvement of the people of the district and individuals from across the Virginia Annual conference.

The needs and opportunities of the community are great; the fiscal resources to support the ministry are limited.  Unlike most congregations, Rising Hope's members and constituents are not blessed with the fiscal resources to fully undergird the congregation's ministry.

Seventeen years ago, the people of the Alexandria District and the annual conference participated in a successful capital campaign that helped create a building that is a visible permanent presence and stable location for the essential ministries of Rising Hope, ministries reflecting the reality of the Kingdom Jesus proclaimed by welcoming rich and poor alike and being racially and culturally diverse.

Over the years, the building has served well the church's ministries. However, opportunities to expand Rising Hope's ministries of worship, mercy, and justice continue to increase.  This increases fiscal and physical needs.

The financial obligation for the building continues.  The church continues to have a mortgage, and well-used equipment is in need of repair and upgrades.

A  $500,000 capital improvement campaign for Rising Hope Mission Church has been approved by the Alexandria District. The campaign will:
  • secure funds to eliminate the remaining building mortgage
  • support building improvements; refurbishing the kitchen--which serves 100s of individuals each week; refrigeration and freezer systems; and the HVAC system
  • secure a dependable van for the Route One ministry.
The elimination of the mortgage obligation alone will free $1,900/month in additional fiscal resources to help address the ministry's-and the peoples'-needs.
To learn more about the great work being done at Rising Hope and how you can help, Rev. Keary Kincannon will be speaking at church and at the February Lunch and Learn on Sunday, Feb. 12.  Please join us!

Heart Havens

February is "Heart Havens" month in the Virginia conference.

Where will my child live when I'm gone?"   In 1993, a parent of an adult with a developmental disability in Virginia asked her United Methodist pastor this very simple question:That question exposed the urgent need for residential services for people with a developmental disability in Virginia.  The Virginia United Methodist Conference Commission on Ministry to Persons with Handicapping Conditions (now the Commission on Disabilities) began researching the possibility of developing residential services for adults with a developmental disability. Heart Havens was born out of those studies.  It is now an independent organization but strongly supported by UM churches in the Virginia Conference

  1. The first Heart Havens home opened in Virginia Beach in 1999.
  2. Heart Havens provides group homes in neighborhoods across Virginia where adults with a developmental disability live as independently as possible
  3. Supported by twenty-four hour staff, each home has four residents of any faith, age, race, or gender, and each resident has his or her own bedroom, decorated the way they want it.
  4. Heart Havens uses a person-centered process to empower the people in the homes to pursue their goals and dreams and try new things.

You can support this important ministry through BUMC's Lenten Collection beginning later in the month or by writing a check now, notating Heart Havens on the memo line.  Learn more at www.heart havens.org; or click here.
