Congratulations to IABC’s 2017 Class of Fellows
The IABC Fellow designation is awarded each year to individuals who are recognized by their peers as outstanding leaders in the profession. It is given to recognize IABC members who have continually made a tremendous contribution to the communication profession, through exemplary achievement within their own organization and through generous service to IABC and its members. We are pleased to announce the 2017 Class of Fellows:
  • Cindy Schmieg, ABC
  • Brenda Siler
  • Lee Hornick
We will be honoring the new IABC Fellows at the 2017 World Conference, happening 11–14 June at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C.
March is Member Month
March is Member Month at IABC: a great opportunity for chapters, regions and IABC HQ to collaborate on membership growth and retention. Throughout the month of March, we’ll offer a 10 percent discount on international dues and we'll waive the US$40 application fee for new members. Plus, we have some exciting incentives for chapters, new members and renewing members:
  • New and renewing members will be entered in a drawing for a VIP prize package to the IABC World Conference.
  • Current members who refer new members will be entered to win a US$500 Visa gift card for every new or lapsed/reinstated member who lists them as a referral source. We’ll also recognize members who refer peers on the IABC website as a Community Champion for the months of April and May.
  • The incoming presidents of the small, medium and large chapters with the greatest percentage of net growth during the month of March will be awarded one complimentary registration to the 2018 Leadership Institute.
We’ve created a toolkit to help chapters with promoting Member Month, which can be found on Leader Centre. Take a look at some tips from IABC Wellington on how they held a successful October Member Month below. Be an IABC Champion and encourage your peers to join today!
AwardSentry replacement

We know that many of you are waiting for more information about the replacement of AwardSentry. We’re excited to share that we have selected a new vendor to help meet the needs of your chapter or region's awards program. We encourage you to review the recorded demo that has taken place to see if AwardForce will meet the needs of your awards program.

AwardForce has provided an info sheet that answers some frequently asked questions based on their experience with similar award programs. It clearly lays out the parameters of a single account with chapters and regions underneath. These are the parameters that coincide with the US$330 per year option available to regional and local IABC award programs.

You do have the option to set up your own independent account with AwardForce at a one-time set-up cost of US$735 and an annual fee of US$4,180. This is completely customizable to meet all of your chapter/region needs. Payments go through your gateway, into your account.

Please note, set-up takes up to four weeks, so if you opt to use the system, you will need to notify IABC immediately. Those requiring a platform as soon as possible may have access as soon as the first full week of March (week of 6 March).

Please note, there is no requirement that any chapter or region uses this solution, but we have negotiated to make it available to each of you. We have heard that some chapters are exploring other options such as Judgify.me or Weemss.com/awards, and would encourage you to explore your options if the available AwardForce solutions do not fit your needs. AwardForce has recently launched lower-cost versions with fewer features, including no payment gateway. A link is provided in the info sheet.

Thank you all again for your patience, your time, and for your work with the various awards programs. If you have any questions, please contact Education Director Ron Hansen at [email protected] or [email protected].

Show your commitment to ethical communication

Has your chapter submitted its 2016 financial report?
Financial reports for 2016 were due on 15 February 2017. If your chapter has not yet submitted its financial report, please be sure to send them to [email protected] no later than 15 March 2017. There are three important pieces to your 2016 financial report:
  • Your financial statement. We provide an easy template to follow. Submit your income and expenses for the year.
  • Your ending balance. Please submit a PDF of your 31 December 2016 bank statement.
  • A consent form. There are two versions of this very simple authorization form: one for regions and chapters in the U.S. and one for all other countries.
VPs of Finance, you can download the financial statement template and the consent form in the Finance section of Leader Centre.

Return all three elements of your financial report no later than 15 March 2017 to [email protected]. You can always contact us if you have any questions or need assistance in moving through this process. Thank you for your cooperation in this crucial element of financial reporting for IABC.

Chapter spotlight: IABC Wellington
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the revival of the IABC Wellington chapter and we’ve got an exciting program of celebratory events planned to mark the occasion with members, both past and present. Wellington is the capital of New Zealand and the hub of the creative industries, known also for its great coffee and innovative craft beer brewing, among other things.

The Wellington chapter has around 100 senior communicators at any one time, with a reach of approximately 400, drawn largely from the public sector reflecting the seat of government, and the remainder composed of private and not-for-profit sectors, agencies and freelancers.

Winning ways in 2016
In 2016, we drew on IABC HQ resources to help promote Member Month on social media channels and through board members’ personal networks. As a result of these efforts, and the changing of personnel within corporate memberships, the Wellington chapter won the award for greatest medium chapter member growth during Member Month 2016, with a substantial growth rate of 17.57 percent. Over the past year, the chapter board has spearheaded two key initiatives to enhance connections between members and deliver even more value for members.

Broadening the event program
Regular events are a key aspect of IABC’s activity in Wellington and in 2016 we recognized the opportunity to diversify what we offered to provide greater benefits to a broader communication audience.

Expanding from a core program of eight to 10 evening events, in 2016 we introduced:
  • An exclusive quarterly boardroom lunch session for the capital’s most senior communicators, with CEOs and their communication director typically paired as speakers.
  • Tested out a breakfast session that enabled members seeking to work in the U.K. to connect with IABC board members based in London, along with communication professionals who had recently arrived from New Zealand to provide tips and insights on how to best take your experience internationally.
  • A mini IABC world conference, which provided members unable to travel to the IABC World Conference with international insights from Australasian communicators who had presented at World Conference in a content-rich, full-day conference format.
Better insight by enhancing the quality of our annual membership survey
The sea of emails our members receive in their day-to-day roles had traditionally meant that online member surveys had typically delivered a low response rate. So in late 2016, we decided as a board to take a different tack, by surveying members personally by phoning them to ask them the questions and then centrally recording the responses in on online survey tool to enable easy analysis. In this way we achieved a response rate to the survey of 48 percent of our total membership, with valuable information now informing our 2017 strategy and events program. At the same time this back-to-basics approach allowed us to communicate directly with members more generally, giving them the ability to be heard.

As a chapter board, we’re excited by the opportunities 2017 and our 10th anniversary bring as we look to introduce a cohort of new communicators to the benefits of being part of IABC.
