Health News from DPI

The Norovirus is a group of viruses that cause inflammation of the stomach and large intestine (gastroenteritis).  This group of viruses is the leading cause of gastroenteritis in the U.S.  Noroviruses are often confused with or mistaken for food poisoning because they can be transmitted through food that's been contaminated with the virus, however, this illness in not the result of food contamination.  Noroviruses are sometimes referred to as the stomach flu, although they are not the influenza virus and there is no vaccination for the Noro-virus.

You can become infected with the Norovirus when you eat food or drink liquids that have been contaminated.  You can also get infected if you touch an object or surface that has been infected with the virus and then touch your nose, mouth, or eyes.  Once your have become infected symptoms generally start within 12-48 hours.

If you come down with a Norovirus infection, you'll probably go from being completely healthy to feeling absolutely miserable within a day or two after being exposed to the virus.  Typical symptoms include nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhea, and stomach cramps.  Other symptoms may include:  low-grade fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue.  Although most of these symptoms are not serious, diarrhea and vomiting can deplete your body of fluids needed and you can become dehydrated as well as malnutrition from not getting enough nutrients.

Norovirus, like other viruses do not respond to antibiotics, which are designed to kill bacteria.  No antivirial drug can treat Norovirus, but in healthy people the illness should go away on its own withing a couple of days.  Most people don't have any long-term problems from the virus.

Good hygiene is the key to preventing an infection with Norovirus, especially when you are in close surroundings with a lot of other people.  Remember to:
  • Wash you hands often and with soap and water
  • Carefully dispose of any contaminated items
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces
If you have Norovirus, do not prepare food and minimize contact with other people until symptoms have subsided.

January 2016:

The Health Care Foundation has been a
long-time supporter of DPI's health focus, providing funds that help us
provide a staff nurse to support our individuals' health.

Heather, our staff nurse, helps make sure everybody stays as healthy as they
can. She performs a comprehensive health assessment for every individual served at DPI, making sure she is aware of all medications people take, when they last had a physical, what kind of health supports they'll need in the coming year,
and many other topics. Heather's health assessments keep DPI up to date with
all participant health situations, and are a major part of our overall
health and wellness efforts.  Heather also participates in education events and activities in order to inform our individuals, staff and the community about healthy lifestyle topics.
