LETTER FROM
THE
PRESIDENT and CEO

Build a Sustainable Leadership Team
Excerpts from a recent article authored by Joy Wilkes,
Atlanta, GA,
speaks to the importance of sustained leadership when it comes to successful economic development. Ms. Wilkes writes about Dr. Dave Kolzow, a personal friend and a go-to economic development expert, about the importance of having continuity across a community's leadership, and its role in economic development. In his article, Kolzow offers insights and advice for communities, today and into the future.
In a profession where the deals that dazzle often receive the most attention, Kolzow explains that there may be a temptation to overlook the incredible importance of developing a collaborative team of leaders at all levels. "In order to make a true difference, economic developers should focus more on developing a leadership team and helping them move forward," he says. The management expert advises that this can only happen through effective listening, intentional performance management, accountability, and transparency.
Such leadership is evident when an organization and its efforts are not dependent upon the ability or personality of one individual, but fueled through an empowered team of leaders, shares Kolzow. "Having many strong leaders in place means something is sustainable and can endure," he points out. In addition to staff leadership development, Kolzow advises that developing the board and maintaining good relations with community leaders at all levels should be a top priority.
While in the past, the job of the economic developer may have focused exclusively on attracting and retaining companies, Kolzow observes that today we need to focus on affecting the quality of life, infrastructure, education, transportation, healthcare and other important factors that make a place desirable for attracting and keeping workers. "Economic development is phenomenally more complicated today than it was when I got started," notes Kolzow, "and our leadership teams need to know a lot more to understand how it all comes together."
What can we in Hutto take from Dr. Kolzow's words of wisdom? This message reinforces what we all know is a top priority for Hutto. Having a seasoned pro remind us how important it is to have a great collaboration between the HEDC, City of Hutto, ESD, HISD, Chamber of Commerce, EWCHEC, Williamson County, and many others, will encourage us to work even harder to maintain, and always look for ways to improve our leadership team.
