Young Artists' Competition - February 12

2016 YAC WInner Kayla Olstinske
      Join us as the RSO presents our annual Young Artists' Competition on Sunday, February 12 at 1:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church, 716 College Ave. Talented high school-age instrumental music students from throughout Southeastern Wisconsin compete for scholarship cash and the soloist spot at our April 7, 2017 Masterworks Concert. This Competition is FREE and open to the public.

This project is funded in part by Potawatomi Hotel and Casino's Heart of Canal Street Program.

    Alternative giving options are available, including a directed donation to the Middle School Mentorship Program and instrumental chairs, as well as monthly giving plans. One of our six income streams, the Patron Drive helps to make our concerts and music education programs possible - most of these are offered free of charge.

What motivates you to keep playing?
Attending wonderful performances.

What advice do you have for you ng musicians and those just starting to learn an instrument?
If possible, practice during the times you most feel like practicing. Also, plan out your practice time:  don't just put in the hours. Plan them out so they're effect hours. And take a  break if you sense yourself getting frustrated.

MP3 Player Collection for Music Therapy Patients
      Did you know that music can reach patients afflicted with Alzheimer's Disease and other dementias? Listening to familiar, emotion-evoking music can help reestablish connections between these patients and the world around them.

YouTube video demonstrating the ability of familiar music to reach those suffering from dementia.

     Racine Habitat for Humanity is collecting new and used MP3 players (including iPods) to benefit patients at St. Monica's Senior Citizens Home. Donations may be dropped of at Racine Habitat for Humanity's Restore Store, 2302 DeKoven Ave (Tuesday & Thursday 10-4, Saturday 9-4 or in the drop box after hours) or at the RSO office.
     A receipt for tax purposes will be provided by Habitat for Humanity upon request. For more information on this program and how to help, please call (262) 898-2929.
