DPI Health and Wellness:
YOGA
An Activity for the Mind, Body, and Sprit

Developing Potential incorporates yoga into our yearly health and wellness programming. We are fortunate to have Leslie Lynn, yoga instructor, come to each location twice a month. Staff also include yoga techniques on a daily/weekly basis for additional benefits. This is one of the many ways we focus on a holistic approach to health and wellness.

Individuals served have reported amazing results from the practice of yoga.  One individual had been taking swim lessons for more than 15 years and had never used both her arms and legs when swimming.  Shortly after beginning yoga at DPI, she began to be able to use both at once.  Yoga can help produce additional connections between the brain and muscle groups, making this kind of progress achievable.

Another individual reported greater mobility in his home, eliminating the use of a stool to boost him into his bed at night. "It really pleases us to hear about the concrete examples of the impacts of yoga on those we serve," says Rebecca Case, DPI Executive Director.

Yoga's approach to wellness focuses on your body's natural tendency toward health and self-healing. According to Natalie Nevins, DO, a board-certified osteopathic family physician, "the purpose of yoga is to create strength, awareness and harmony in both the mind and body."

There are more than 100 different types of yoga, most sessions typically include breathing exercises, meditation, and assuming postures (sometimes called poses) that stretch and flex various muscle groups.

DPI Employment Connections:
Quarterly Gatherings
Build Connections and Skills
DPI hosts quarterly gatherings of the individuals in our DPI Employment Connections program.  These gatherings serve as an opportunity for the individuals, who are all working in the community at their respective jobs, to get to know one another.  Individuals and staff are able to share information about jobs, discuss topics related to employment and have fun together!

Some of the quarterly gatherings include individuals on our wait list for services, as well.  This gives the individuals an opportunity to get to know others in their community as well as learn more about opportunities that can become available to them.

Speakers and topics that help our individuals grow on their career path are planned for 2018.  "We really love seeing the individuals come together to learn from one another and to share their accomplishments.  Having individuals serve in mentor roles with one another is empowering," says Lori Oxborough, DPI Employment Connections Supervisor.
