Greetings from Council Member Mike Knox
At Large Council Member Pos 1
BLACK HISTORY MONTH
February is Black History month. " We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools." -Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
DON'T FORGET VALENTINE'S DAY.
February 14th is Valentine's Day. Tie a string on your finger so you don't come home empty handed.
RODEO TIME IN HOUSTON
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo rolls into NRG Park Feb. 27. Trail riders hit the dusty trail the week before the rodeo. The rodeo parade will be Saturday February 24th in downtown. Saddle up and yeehaw!
Cornelius Clinic
Helen Knox and I enjoyed visiting Sig and Patricia Cornelius who gifted the clinic to C.A.P.S at the C.A.P.S Center in Houston. More than 70 volunteers moved their cots and bedding to shelter the rescue animals during Hurricane Harvey. The center didn't flood thanks to the retention pond in the back that doubles as an exercise area.
RECYCLING CONTRACT
On January 10, 2018, Houston City Council voted 12-3 to approve the FCC recycling contract to process recyclable materials including glass and film plastic ( plastic shopping bags).
SNOW FOR THE NEW YEAR
It snowed going into the Christmas season and we received another dusting of snow and ice in January. Classes were cancelled at area schools and everyone made the most of the situation. The city opened additional shelters for anyone who didn't have a warm spot to stay during the frigid temperatures.
MLK ORATORY COMPETITION
Happy to spend the morning with friend Melanie Lawson who has been with ABC 13 for many years. We were together for the 15th Annual Gardere Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratory Competition at the historic Antioch Missionary Baptist Church of Christ. Dozens of fifth graders took the stage to dazzle the judges with their oratory skills.
PLEASANTVILLE
First community meeting of 2018 in Pleasantville in their brand new center. Topics included environmental issues and traffic patterns in the east side. A formal dedication of the beautiful new space happens later in February.
HOUSTON CHEVRON MARATHON
Thousands turned out in the cold for the annual Chevron Marathon. The mission of the Houston Marathon Foundation is to support the advancement of running as an element of a balanced, healthy lifestyle in the Houston community and nationally.
UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX
Ribbon cutting for the Grand Re-Opening of the University of Phoenix main campus. This is a private, for profit college headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. Founded in 1976, the university confers degrees in over 100 degree programs at the associate, bachelor, master's, and doctoral degree level.
ETHICS HEARINGS AT CITY HALL
Boards, commissions, committees, councils, corporations, authorities, agencies, etc. involve residents of the City of Houston who volunteer their time and expertise for the benefit of the community by setting policy, settling disputes, aiding fellow citizens, fundraising, and planning for Houston’s future.
If you are interested in appointment by Mayor Sylvester Turner in an area where your expertise and commitment will make a difference, please review the board descriptions, the legal requirements and qualifications to serve, as well as the boards’ websites and social media sites to determine if you are a good fit for a specific board or commission. We look forward to your application!

MS. EMMA G. PRIMAS
“I was honored to present Ms. Emma G. Primas with a certificate designating her as an Honorary Senior Ambassador for Houston. Sadly, Ms. Primas passed away two days after this photo was taken. At 112 years old, Ms. Primas was living history, an encouragement, and a blessing to all who knew her. She will be missed.”

HIGHER EDUCATION
Council Member Knox was interviewed by a student from Loyola University, Rhonda Vickory, who asked about leadership in government, and ethics. We wish Ms. Vickory all the best in her future studies.
TRADE TALK WITH FRIENDS
Got a chance to visit with Director-General Peter Chen of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office with his staff. They dropped by the office recently. Trade between our countries is key to solid relationships.
HOUSTON ASTROS TROPHY TOUR
The Astros World Series Trophy arrived at City Hall to kick off its 100 stop tour. The line to snap a picture with the trophy was long but my staff and I managed to have our picture taken. The trophy weighs 22 pounds and is two feet tall, and no we did not drop it or bend it.
