Movie Tourism: How The Film Industry Impacts Travel


From the serpentine Gotthard Pass in the Swiss Alps, which starred in Goldfinger, to the stunning landscapes featured in White Lotus, including Hawaiian golden hours and Sicilian coastlines hugging cliffsides, some movies and TV series inherently spark wanderlust. Movie tourism, also known as set jetting, goes beyond simply visiting a famous film location or tacking on a cinematic tour to an itinerary. It's about the way films and shows inspire viewers to pack their bags and explore movie destinations in real life.

More than 1.4 Billion People Traveled Internationally in 2024 as Tourism Returns to Pre-pandemic Highs


Feel like airport security lines keep getting longer, or that you’re booking hotel reservations way further in advance than you used to?


It’s true. The UN’s World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has just released its 2024 year-in-review data, confirming that the tourism industry has bounced back from the pandemic.

About 1.4 billion people traveled internationally last year, which is 99% of the number who did the same in 2019, the last full year before Covid-19 hit the world.

Gen Z Travel Trends Set to Disappear in 2025


Generation Z is seeking a more intentional and authentic approach to exploring the world this year.

Younger generations are driving a rising interest in travel. Gen Z, those born roughly between 1997 and 2012, as well as millennials, those born roughly between 1981 and 1996, were reported to have taken nearly five trips, on average, in 2023, according to a survey by McKinsey published in May 2024. Newsweek spoke to experts who unpacked several travel habits associated with Gen Z that are on their way in 2025.

Hotel Execs Talk Upscale Advantage of Apartment-Style Accommodations


In 2024, hotel companies expanded in the evolving upscale extended stay space with apartment-style accommodations. 

Marriott International grew its Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy brand and inked a strategic licensing agreement with Sonder Holdings, adding its 9,000-room portfolio of primarily apartment-style accommodations in urban markets. Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, meanwhile, linked up with residential hospitality management company Reside on a 10-year development relationship that debuted the hotel company’s residences tier domestically.

Living History: Black Aviators Tour


Step back in time and explore the incredible legacy of African American aviators with our special tour, led by a living history interpreter portraying John Greene, the original manager of the historic Columbia Air Center. Discover the stories of trailblazers like Eugene Bullard and local hero Gus McLeod, while delving into the rich history of the first licensed airfield owned and operated by Black aviators in the country. Join us for an immersive experience where history comes alive and gain a deeper understanding of the groundbreaking contributions these aviators made to the world of aviation. 

Corridor Conversation: Columbia Air Center


Columbia Air Center, also known as Riverside Airfield, was the first licensed Black-owned and operated airport in the United States. Since 2022, the museum has been honored to work with four Columbia Air Center’s descendant families and pilots to create the exhibition, Columbia Air Center – Determined to Fly. This exhibit will be located in one of the museum’s three 800 sq ft. galleries and is scheduled to open to the public in the fall of 2025. Museum Director Dr. Nadine Boksmati-Fattouh and Collections Curator and project lead Luke Perez will present a virtual talk discussing the curatorial approach and implementation of this groundbreaking interactive exhibition. Presented by Hyattsville Aging in Place.

Sharon Robinson: "Myth and Mystery" Public Artist Reception


Join us for an opening reception of “Myth and Mystery” with artist Sharon Robinson. Trained as a city planner and working in the transit and urban design field for over 20 years, Sharon Robinson has been a full-time artist, muralist and teacher since 2000. Her artworks are intricate and richly textured collages and mixed media pieces that explore identity and nourish the humanistic spirit. This exhibit will be on display in the lobby of the Publick Playhouse from Mon., Feb. 3, 2025-Sun., Apr. 13, 2025 during regular building hours (M-F, 9 am – 5 pm). Please note that art exhibits are not viewable if a performance or event is taking place due to the close proximity of the theatre. Black History’s Groundbreaking Geniuses


This performance is part of our Education on Stage Series and is recommended for Grades K-6. Genius comes in all shapes and sizes, and Black History is filled with amazing inventors, artists and thinkers who changed the world. This show focuses on the brilliance of over a dozen amazing characters from Black History: Scientists like surgeon Daniel Hale Williams, mathematicians like Dorothy Vaughan, Literary Geniuses like Ralph Ellison and Maya Angelou, and artistic geniuses like Alvin Ailey. Learn about these geniuses and inspire your young audiences to discover their own genius.

Voices From the Past: Hazel Scott


Classical and jazz pianist and singer Hazel Scott (1920–1981) was the first person of African descent to host their own network TV show in America (The Hazel Scott Show). The Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts (CAAPA) explores Scott’s life, legacy, and music. Journey with curator Professor Nevilla Ottley as you hear songs played and loved by Scott, with narration exploring and highlighting the life of the musician, who was also an outspoken critic of racial discrimination and segregation.

The Sound of DC: A Visual History of Go-Go Artist and Curator Talk


The Sound of DC: A Visual History is a four-part exhibition series focused on the rich history of the music scene in the DMV area.

The newest chapter of this series focuses on Go-Go, a style of funk that originated in D.C. in the 1970s; leading into a look at how fashion factored into these unique DC music scenes; and concluding with photography from behind-the-scenes at prominent local music venues. Each section will collaborate with local stakeholders and exhibit artifacts such as posters, flyers, zines, photographs, and audio recordings.

Lost History of Frederick Douglass in Prince George's County, Maryland


Learn about the lost history of U.S. Marshal Frederick Douglass in Prince George's County, Maryland in this groundbreaking new virtual presentation. Until now the history of Frederick Douglass in Prince George's County has been completely uknown and unrecorded.

Presentation will be 30 minutes followd by 10 minutes of Q& A. Upon registration a Zoom link will be provided.


Black History Month Talk: Nottingham Middle Passage Project


Enslaved Africans disembarked in Nottingham, Prince George’s County, between 1751 and 1771. Join Janis Hagey to learn about the ongoing research about the people trafficked in the trans-Atlantic human trade along the Patuxent River, a site of memory today. Youth Aviators: Pilot Module


It is the College Park Aviation Museum’s mission to connect with young adults who are interested in flight and flight support. In this first of three modules, student participants will get introductory lectures into topic areas covered on the Private Pilot FAA Knowledge Exam. They will be tested on content learned for retention and they will interact with pilots, use flight simulators, and explore a fully functioning airport. Student participants must be able to commit to all four Saturdays of the program. Registration required.

National Capital Equitation League Finale


The National Capitol Equitation League (NCEL) is comprised of riding schools throughout Maryland and Virginia, giving riders an option to stay competitive during winter season. Our league affiliates include the National Capitol Short Stirrup Equitation League (NCSSEL) and the National Capitol Junior Equitation League (JEL), which provide a natural progression of learning and competitive riding.
