UMW
2018 Reading Program
Oak Lawn United Methodist Women are pleased to announce the Reading Program for 2108. Our first book is  Adventure of Ascent by Luci Shaw. It is in the Spiritual Growth category. We will meet at the church on Wednesday, February 21 at 5:30 to discuss.

Here's a description of the book:
For most of us, growing older is a reality we try to put off, but then we realize - shockingly - that it happens anyway. We immediately look around to see how others on the path just ahead of us a dealing with it. Here is the intrepid Luci Shaw, taking you on a virtual hike with steps more deliberate and slow but also with surprising vistas that fill us with gratitude. In this book, Shaw serves as a fearless and eloquent scout. As she traverses new territory, she records her experiences lovingly, honestly, sorrowfully and joyfully. Here's what it's like, and here's what to be ready for. These field notes will inform your own journey, no matter what your age. 176 pages.

Available at the Dallas Public Library, amazon.com

Please join us! If you have any questions, contact Sue Thorn at thethorns@sbcglobal.net or 214-987-4314.

John Wesley's sermons inspired the Methodist movement in America that has brought us to where we are today.

In the season of Lent this year, we will go on a journey to rediscover the fundamentals of being Christian. With the sermons of John Wesley as our starting point, we will reengage with our roots and rediscover what it means to be a Christian in the 21st century. We will compliment the sermon series with two options for Bible study to deepen the conversation! Details and RSVP information is in the left-hand column.

It's easy to be almost Christian--to be an upstanding citizen and do good deeds--but what does it mean to fully live into who God made us to be and be altogether Christian? What is the purpose God has for us?

This year, "may we all thus experience what it is to be, not almost only; but altogether Christians," as we prepare for the celebration of Easter!

Lent Theology Pub

Join us as we partner with Grace UMC to journey through Lent in a *somewhat* unconventional setting with a *somewhat* non-traditional lectionary-based study. OLUMC pastors Rachel, Ben, and Gregg, along with Grace pastors Judith, Eric, and Becky will lead lively conversations at Capitol Pub in Dallas as we discuss:

"Seven Words the Empire Fears: Biblical Responses to Controversial Times." A study based on words the CDC recently discouraged/banned(?) employees from using.

Thursday nights at 7pm from Feb. 15 through March 29.*
Open to ALL adults.
*March 29 study will begin after conclusion of Maundy Thursday services.

Feb 15: **Evidence-based**. Matthew 6 - Whenever you pray...why the empire values posturing over practices. (Leader: Becky Hensley)

Feb 22: **Vulnerable**. Mark 1 - Jesus in the wilderness...why the empire doesn't care who is at the margins. (Leader: Ben Hensley)

March 1: **Transgender**. Mark 9 - The Transfiguration...why the empire fears people's true selves. (Leader: Judith Reedy)

March 8: **Entitlement**. John 2 - Cleansing of the Temple...why the empire places obstacles to people's needs. (Leader: Rachel Baughman)

March 15: **Diversity**. John 3 - God does not condemn the world...why the Empire demands conformity against a faith that embraces diversity. (Leader: Gregg Smith)

March 22: **Science-based**. John 12 - The Hour Has Come...why the Empire denies Climate change even as the time has come for action. (Leader: Becky Hensley)

March 29/MAUNDY THURSDAY: **Fetus**. Mark 15 - Passion narrative...why the Empire denies ("fetus") or forces names ("King of the Jews") to maintain power. (Leader: Eric Markinson)

Marriage Committee
In November 2018, at the annual Church Conference, the congregation decided to study to possibility of expanding our marriage policy to allow the conduct and celebration of same-sex marriages in our church.  This committee has been meeting, but does not have a recommendation at this point.  We need to learn your beliefs, opinions, and attitudes before we can finish our work.

The Marriage Committee has opened a line of communication for your thoughts, beliefs and opinions, an anonymous web-based survey.  There are only four items in this survey, so please take a few minutes to share.
