February 2015

Happy New Year from the Alumni Office! Even though it is the shortest month on the calendar, we have a lot of opportunities for alumni to get together during the next 28 days.

Our regular monthly lunches are held on the second Friday (on campus) and third Tuesday (at Giannilli's II in Greensburg, Pennsylvania). Both lunches provide us the opportunity to connect with alumni as well as to have great food. To register, contact the Alumni Office at 724-805-2568.  Also in February, on back to back weekends we are heading south to Florida to enjoy the company of our Bonita Springs (Feb. 8) and Palm Beach (Feb. 15) Bearcats. Contact Lisa Poole for more information.

On Saturday, Feb. 21, join us on campus to cheer on our basketball teams as they play their last regular season home games against Thomas More College before the playoffs get underway. The women's game gets underway at 2 p.m. and the men's team plays at 4 p.m.

We wrap things up at the end of the month in Cranberry Township, Pennyslvania on Thursday, Feb. 26, from 5-7 p.m. at The Sports Grille Cranberry. I hope to see you at one or more of these events this month. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Go Bearcats!

Thom F. Janidlo, J.D., C'64

Upon graduation from Saint Vincent College in 1964, I accepted a commission in the U.S. Marine Corps. I served in Vietnam as an infantry platoon commander for one year. I remained in the U.S. Marine Corps for more than nine years and when I resigned my regular commission I accepted a reserve commission at the rank of major so that I could attend law school. I graduated from the University of San Diego with a juris doctor degree and moved to Alaska where I worked as an Assistant Attorney General for nine years in the area of child protection. In 1991 I opened my own law office and specialized in family law. I have served on many non-profit organization's boards of directors, including organizations that advocated for women and children's rights. I started the Alaska Chapter of the National Committee for Prevention of Child Abuse and served on that organization's national board. I am currently the co-chair of the Alaska Child's Justice Act Task Force. My private law practice is now limited to adoptions as I look toward full retirement in the next several months.  I attribute my experiences at SVC as inspiration to continue to serve others.

*Editors Note: Mr. Janidlo was the recipient of the Alumnus of Distinction Award in 2014.

Grandparents University!

Hosted by the Office of Service Learning and Community Outreach and the Alumni Office, the first annual Grandparent University(GPU) at Saint Vincent College is about to begin registration!

Grandparents who stress the importance of education to their grandchildren can now back up those words with actions. Grandparent University

is a unique intergenerational learning experience designed to actively engage our youth and their grandparents while giving them the chance to live and learn together.

Registration will begin April 1! All spots are first-come, first-served and are expected to fill quickly! You will be able to visit the Saint Vincent College main webpage for a link for registration or call the Office of Service Learning and Community Outreach.

While on campus, participants attend classes taught by SVC faculty, stay in student housing, dine on campus and enjoy the life of average college students. Under the instruction of SVC professors, the students learn about their chosen major and participate in a variety of activities.

Upon completing their assignments, our GPUparticipants will receive a graduation certificate for all of their hard work as college students during their stay at Saint Vincent College. Along with the activities in the classroom, there is time to socialize at the Bearcat Picnic on the field, swim at the Frank and Elizabeth Resnik Pool or tour the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve.

Any questions can be directed to: Jessica Adams at 724-805-2288.
