Every conscientious wind and brass player should have a thorough knowledge of transposition. Whether it's reading symphonic parts, sharing a lead sheet with a pianist, covering parts when someone can't make rehearsal, or reading from a score, the ability to transpose is a valuable addition to every musician's skill set. In this 90-minute session, trumpet faculty member Dan Teager will take a little of the mystery out of transposition. Participants should have basic reading skills in treble or bass clef (preferably both). Free for WCMS students; $10 for general public. RSVP by phone, email, or at front office.

For WCMS adult learners! Please join us for coffee, tea, pastries, music, and guest faculty speaker Vartan Aghababian! Vartan will help participants to hear and understand the wonder of musical form. Come experience how much better you hear music once you know about the things for which to listen! Prior to the presentation, you are welcome to share a piece/song on which you are working in your lesson or class. The event is open to WCMS adult students only, no audience members or guests, please. Free admission. Please RSVP by Monday, February 13 by phone, email, or at the front office.
We were delighted to have the opportunity to dine with many of you at TWK (The Waterfield Kitchen) for a "give back" evening on January 25. Ten percent of all food sales from the evening were donated by the restaurant to WCMS. In addition, WCMS students and faculty provided lovely music throughout the evening. Thank you to Quinn Conner, Emma Daly, Tad Hitchcock, John Jenke, Emilia Lew, Garrett Nagel, Abby Sprague, and Valerie Walton for sharing their music with us. We also appreciate the many local businesses and shops who generously donated items and services for the evening's raffle: An Elegant Affair, A Tavola, BK Organizing, China Sky, Club Z Tutoring, Frame Haven, Lucia Ristorante, Jen & Kevin Gallagher, Pondview Florist, Salone Estetica, Soluna Garden Farms, Studio on the Common, and Wine Country. The evening netted over $1,000 for WCMS. Thank you for supporting this event!
Following the purchase of 407 Highland Avenue in 1998, a lot of work needed to be done to make the house into a music school. Some fun facts from construction managers John Moriarty & Associates:
  • Over 3,000 cubic yards of fill were required for parking and access.
  • Over 1/2 an acre of sound insulation material was used.
  • 70,000 watts of electric humidifiers were installed to protect the instruments.
  • The electric company couldn't believe our requirements, seeing as we were "just" a music school.
  • The new "slate" roof on Nichols Hall is made of recycled rubber tires.
  • Over 20,000 hours of labor went into the construction.
