Marketing materials are important to your success as an actor. They can open the door to more auditions and opportunities (and your training and skill will get you the job). In recent newsletters, I have talked about resumes and headshot. This month, I turn to demo reels.
- If you live here in AZ, you need a combination reel for your agent that includes a variety of film work, commercial work and industrial work. Your agent will advise you on the length, but I recommend no longer than 2.5 minutes.
- If you live or are planning to move to LA, you need separate reels. One for commercials and one for theatrical (film and television); 2.5 minutes max for each.
- You should never include theatre work on any theatrical or combo reel. (The A/V quality is generally too poor.)
- Your opening frame should be of YOU, not the other actor in the scene with you.
- For your first reel, it is okay to include class work, providing it looks professional.
- You should have a high rez version for your records, but a medium rez should be the one you send out.
- You'll want to name the file with your name: MelbyAmandaTheatricalReel.mov, for example.
- Store them in a Dropbox or cloud that has a public link available for e-mailing.
- Post them on YouTube or Vimeo as well, on your own channel, your website and your Facebook page.
- Update, like your headshots, every one to two years.
- I HIGHLY recommend you figure out how to edit this yourself on whatever software your computer has for editing. It will save you a TON of money in the long run and is not that difficult. If you have an Apple computer, the Apple store offers FREE classes on their software, fyi.
Happy Editing and Marketing!
