Healdsburg Tourism Improvement District Brings Journalists

to Town

The Healdsburg Tourism Improvement District which is made up of all the lodging establishments within the city limits recently brought 27 national journalists and bloggers to Healdsburg.  The writers stayed at different lodging properties in town, and visited local restaurants and wineries.  While they were here the writers also shared in a number of experiences unique to Healdsburg, including bike riding through Dry Creek Valley and hiking at Lake Sonoma.  They also learned about tree pruning at Dry Creek Peach Farm and made wreaths from the pruned branches.  At Relish Culinary they learned about foraging mushrooms, and made their own mushroom lunch.  A walking tour through downtown Healdsburg featured the history of Healdsburg, as well as a guided tree walk of the Plaza trees and a visit to the Healdsburg Museum.  Most of the writers were from the very cold areas of the country, so they were amazed by our very spring like weather.  We did try to impress upon them, that we are experiencing unusual weather for Northern California, and that our drought could have very serious consequences for us.

2nd Annual Business Showcase and Community Resource Fair

Mark Your Calendars for the 2nd Annual Business Showcase and Community Resource Fair September 10, 2014.  This fun event co-sponsored by the City of Healdsburg and the Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce takes place from 3-7pm in the Plaza.  Last year we had balmy weather and an interesting assortment of booths handing out information, discount coupons, freebies and food samples. Each of the city departments was represented including the Fire Department, and  the Public Works Department  who brought large vehicles for the kids to climb on.  This year is an election year, so I'm sure there will be a full array of local candidates! Showcase your business in the Plaza to hundreds of local customers. Booth registration forms will be available soon.

My name is Melissa Cresta. I am the Assistant Customer Service Manager at Bank of the West in Healdsburg. I have always been interested in banking because I love customer service and always knew it would be a great career for me. I have been in banking for six years now. I started as a part-time teller and over the years, have progressively climbed the ladder to my current management position.

I was born and raised in Santa Rosa with my mother, father, and sister. I attended Lassen Community College, where I was on the college rodeo team and was the sports editor for the Lassen College

newspaper. My husband, Josh, and I will have been married for two years this upcoming April. We have two dogs that are our kids, Milo and Mia. I love being an Ambassador for the Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce because I love getting to know people from Healdsburg on a business level and being involved with the community.

Economic Development
Healdsburg at the Fancy Food Show

Healdsburg was represented at the West Coast's largest food and beverage trade show - which featured 1,300 exhibitors from more than 35 countries to showcase their products to the 18,000 attendees. Food producers from Sonoma County & Healdsburg were exhibitors at the show sharing tasty samples of their products.

The Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Sonoma County BEST, a private-public partnership for economic development, and Blair Kellison, CEO of Traditional Medicinals and Co-Chair of the Food Industry Group were there to represent Sonoma County's food cluster. The group gathered a good list of potential prospects that may be interested in moving to Sonoma County.

Algebra Academy in the Works

The Healdsburg Chamber is participating with HEF (Healdsburg Education Foundation) and the Healdsburg School District to present the Mike Hauser Algebra Academy in Healdsburg this summer. Former Santa Rosa Chamber CEO, Mike Hauser understood that algebra is a critical learning obstacle to graduation for students with language difficulties. His vision for a better educated workforce was launched in 2008 with a unique partnership between businesses and the schools.

The Algebra Academy helps "English As A Second Language" (ESL) students grasp algebra concepts by introducing them to learning experiences each weekday for three consecutive weeks during the summer. Students rotate between employers where daily algebra classes are given by a credentialed math teacher in a conference room on the work-site.  Later that day the students are able to interact with professionals in the workplace to reinforce their algebra lesson. The students are also given tours of different workplaces and hands-on opportunities to use what they are learning in algebra classes to demonstrate problem solving.

We are currently looking for employers who can offer a workplace experience to approximately 15 students for up to three days during a week in the summer. For further information about how you and your business associates can participate in this exciting new program for Healdsburg students please contact Jennifer LeBrett at 433-6935 or [email protected]
Healdsburg Chamber to Collaborate with Santa Rosa Chamber in WHEEL Program

The Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce is collaborating with the Santa Rosa Chamber in the WHEEL (Workplace Held Employee English Learning) Program which was created at the Santa Rosa Chamber to help businesses provide English classes to their non-English speaking employees at work.  This is based on the belief that not only do the employers and the employees benefit from improved language skills, the entire community benefits as workers productivity improves and as they function more easily in the community.  The WHEEL Program was started in 2008 and now includes access to other programs including financial literacy, family friendly workplace policies, and parenting classes.

Two Healdsburg businesses are currently participating in the WHEEL Program.  If you would like further information about bringing English classes to your workplace for your employees, please contact the Chamber.  Classes are formed on an as requested basis.

"Investing in our employees is one of the most important things we do," says Will Seppi, president of Costeaux French Bakery, "annually our company commits significant resources for the betterment of our people." On February 18th, employees of Costeaux and Sonoma Brinery will begin a thorough English course through the WHEEL program offered by the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce.
