Chamber Staff Makes Good Use of Interns
We are pleased to welcome two Healdsburg High School students to the Chamber as our interns through the Healdsburg High School Academic Internship Program run by Chamber board chair Shelley Anderson. High school juniors, Taylor and Kelly started last week, and are performing a survey of downtown business owners, managers and employees as their project. The survey questions pertain to the City Council's possible decision to place paid parking meters around the Plaza. When they have finished surveying the business people downtown, Taylor and Kelly will post their results to spread sheets, create graphs and ultimately a power point presentation for the City Council. The interns are here at the Chamber from 9am-3pm Thursday and Friday for three weeks. They have been working closely with administrative assistant Aleena Decker who expressed how professional the students are as they continue to meet the various business owners in the downtown. The interns are also required to make a presentation to the community following the conclusion of the project. We will be making announcements of the dates of the City Council meeting as well as the community presentation as they become available. Please show your support for this exciting workforce development project, as well as for these remarkable young ladies by attending one of their presentations.

HHS Awarded $35,000 for Marketing & Entrepreneurship Program
Healdsburg High School's Marketing and Entrepreneurship in Agriculture and Tourism (META) Academy initiative received a $35,000 Specialized Secondary Program grant through The California Department of Education. META Academy offers a new standards-based curriculum that gives students the opportunity to study agriculture-based hospitality and tourism, anchors of Healdsburg's economy. "META Academy is truly a pioneering program for the state of California," said Jeff Harding, HUSD Superintendent. "We received overwhelming support from local businesses, the local junior college, and town government for our new program that will provide meaningful connections between a rigorous standards-based high school program and post-secondary training, education, and employment." META Academy is the among the first programs in California to integrate traditionally elective courses of Culinary Arts, Agriculture, and Hospitality with hands-on academic and career-oriented instruction linked to the local community. META Academy students will take traditional courses, such as English, with an emphasis on marketing strategies, agricultural issues, sustainability, culture of tourism, personal career exploration, and internships. Working in collaboration with Santa Rosa Junior College, Healdsburg High School is exploring course and credit opportunities for META students. META Academy students will graduate prepared to continue studies in a post-secondary institution or to begin their career in the vast industry of culinary arts, agriculture, viticulture, hospitality, or tourism.
"META Academy challenges students in a dynamic, project-based environment focused on the thriving Sonoma County industries of hospitality and agriculture," said Chris Vanden Heuvel, Healdsburg High School Principal. "Students will participate in engaging experiences in collaboration with local industry allowing them to prepare for their life beyond graduation."
