Feb. 10 Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday begins Lent, a season of fasting and prayer. The practice of wearing ashes on the forehead symbolizes that we came from dust and to dust we shall return. The
ashes are a sign of penitence and remorse rooted in Jewish tradition.

* All Jewish & Muslim Holidays start on the preceding evening at sundown.

** Jewish Holy Days and Muslim Holy Days are determined by the lunar calendar.

Northeastern Connecticut Chapter
attends a Muslim Turkish Luncheon

On Sunday January 10, ten members of our Daughters of Abraham Book Group traveled to New Haven to attend a Muslim Turkish Luncheon.  Two of our group's members, Ayse Coskum and Ikbal Sencan extended the invitation at our November meeting so we could all get to know each other over food, dancing and informal conversation. And what a success it was !!! As one of our members, Virginia Fulton put it, "The seemingly simple, universal act of gathering around food, conversation, music and dance has such power"  We met at the offices of the Peace Islands Institute, joined by the Sisters in Spirit.  This a group of Muslim women formed through Peace Islands Institute who wanted to interact with other women of the three Abrahamic faiths. They believe, as do the Daughter of Abraham, that getting together, whether over a book discussion, singing, or sharing is one of the most wonderful ways to know each other better through by sharing differences and similarities. After watching a short video about Peace Islands Institute, who's goals include, facilitating unity for peace, building relationships among diverse cultures and traditions, and developing original and alternative perspectives on global and social issues, we ate, laughed, danced and shared all afternoon. No one wanted to leave,as we all felt our affinity for one another growing.  As we left to return home, we left with us all feeling heart and spirit warmed and looking forward to another encounter such as this one.

Membership Update

Since last summer we have had, on average, 2 -3 inquiries a week regarding joining a group or starting a group. These inquiries come initially from the link on our website. When we receive an inquiry information is sent out about joining an existing group, or connecting with other inquirers from the same area. If the request is to form a new group guidelines are sent for starting a group, recruiting members, as well as general information about Daughters of Abraham.  A mentor is assigned to the group to help with the process and to support their efforts during the first year. If a mentor is unable to attend the informational meeting she will participate via Skype. All new groups will receive our first year curriculum with suggested readings.
Currently, we are working with people from the Chicago area, Cleveland (and possibly Columbus) Ohio,  Nashua/Hollis New Hampshire and in MA -Shrewsbury/Worcester, Needham, and, most recently Brookline.
Given the number of requests we've received and the limited number of mentors currently available, we need veteran members to mentor new groups. If you or someone in your group would be interested in mentoring we will provide a "Guide on the Mentoring Process." We also have current mentors who are available to talk with you.
