How do I get taxed on my business profits as a Sole Proprietor or Partnership?

When you operate as a Sole Proprietor or Partnership the profit that you make is added to your personal income on your T1 Personal Income Tax Return.

The business income which you earn and business expenses which you incur are added to form T2125 “Statement of Business or Professional Activities”. The net income (loss) from your Sole Proprietorship or Partnership is then added as business income on line 135 of your T1 Personal Income Tax Return.

I commonly get asked what business expenses can be deducted as a Sole Proprietor or Partnership and the general rule is that eligible business expenses are those the business incurs to generate income. Examples of eligible business expenses include: Advertising, Bank Fees, Business Licenses, Insurance, Office Expenses, Legal & Accounting Fees, Meals & Entertainment, and Travel. Read more
