NEWMS to honor five female leaders at Women of Distinction luncheon
Cristina Carreon,  Daily Journal
TUPELO - New Expectations for Women in Mississippi will recognize several women and  one organization at the upcoming Women of Distinction luncheon.
"We asked for nominations for women who have spent time, resources and most of all, her hope and heart, to cultivating a better, healthier community, where women and families can thrive," said CREATE Foundation director of marketing and NEWMS member, Albine Bennett.
The event will be at 11:30 a.m. March 8 at the BancorpSouth Conference Center.
Five women and one organization will be honored this year for their work as role models and their achievem ents in the community.
"We looked at women who have made a significant difference in the community by their giving, by being strong supporters or activists . We had several community members turning in names of people who had made an impression on them," said Boys & Girls Club of North Mississippi chief executive officer and NEWMS member, Zell Long.
This year's women of distinction include Juanita Floyd of Belden; Shawn Brevard, Kay Matthews and Nettie Davis of Tupelo and Patty Tucker of Shannon.

Keeping Tupelo beautiful: Volunteers spend holiday cleaning up community
 Caleb Bedillion, Daily Journal
TUPELO - It was a day off from school, but lessons were learned.
Students from Tupelo schools, community volunteers and employees of Tupelo Parks and Recreation combed through a handful of neighborhoods and parks in the city Monday picking up trash and litter from the roadside.
Monday's event was organized by Keep Tupelo Beautiful, primarily as a way to help teach the next generation good habits that will keep the city's public spaces clean for everyone.
"Litter prevention is a huge education problem," said Kathryn Rhea, director of Keep Tupelo Beautiful.
The organization Rhea helps lead routinely hosts clean-up days, and has another planned for April. Monday, however, had a little wider focus than simply sprucing up the city's visual appeal.
Instead, Rhea said she wanted to help children have some first-hand experiences with the nuisance created by simply tossing trash onto the streets.
"I think it's important for kids to pick up the areas they drive by and see it a little differently," Rhea said. "Our theme today is 'off school, on service.'"
Rhea wasn't the one one with an agenda. Read More.
