Welcome Mark Naftalin to WPKN!
'The Mark Naftalin Show' Debuts Wednesday, February 10th from 4pm to 7pm. Catch it LIVE or in the archives on 89.5-FM or wpkn.org

Mark Naftalin is an American blues keyboardist, recording artist, composer, and record producer. He appears on the historic first four albums by Paul Butterfield Blues Band in the mid 1960's as a band member, and as such was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.

Some background:  Mark Naftalin moved to Chicago in 1961, and graduated from the University of Chicago in 1964 where he performed on piano at campus "twist parties," popular at the time. It was at these parties that Naftalin first played with blues harmonica player Paul Butterfield and guitarist Elvin Bishop, the nucleus of what was to become the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.  The band was one of the earliest racially integrated groups - The Butterfield rhythm section of  Jerome Arnold  and  Sam Lay  had been hired away from  Howlin' Wolf 's band.

He later worked onstage with the late fellow Butterfield Band member Mike Bloomfield and has been active from his home in Marin County in the San Francisco Bay Area as a festival and radio producer for several decades... and now WPKN 89.5-FM is lucky and very HAPPY to have him on our roster of music programmers. Join Mark TODAY from 4pm-7pm for a 3-hour set.  Mark Naftalin will join, what we've been calling the Wednesday WPKN All-Stars on the 2nd Wednesday of every month from 4pm to 7pm with his "The Mark Naftalin Show".

Naftalin lives locally and he had been doing a radio show since 1979 both live and via remote for the San Francisco station KALW-FM. He's ended that run and will be focusing show for WPKN. He becomes our second Rock n Roll Hall of Fame member on the WPKN roster joining WPKN's Chris Frantz (Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club).

Welcome Mark!

HIGH FIDELITY

High Fidelity is a 2000 American comedy-drama film directed by Stephen Frears, staring J ohn Cusack, Iben Hjejle, Jack Black, Todd Louiso, Tim Robbins, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Lisa Bonet; based on the 1995 British novel of the same name by Nick Hornby, with the setting moved from London to Chicago, and the name of the lead character changed.

With a nod to the upcoming WPKN 'MUSIC MASH '16-Record Fair', Saturday, March 5th (see below), High Fidelity celebrates a bit of the vinyl LP culture.  Actor John Cusack's character, Rob spends his days at the record store, Championship Vinyl, where he holds court over the customers that drift in.  Helping Rob in his task of musical elitism are Dick (Todd Luiso) and Barry (Jack Black), the "musical moron twins," as Rob refers to them. Armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of all things musical, they complie "top five" lists for every conceivable occasion, openly mock the tastes of their customers, and, every so often, sell a few records.

All films are screened on the third Wednesday of each month from January through May

WPKN 89.5-FM SALUTES THE FAIRFIELD THEATRE COMPANY AND CHRIS FRANTZ AND TINA WEYMOUTH AND TOM TOM CLUB

'We Built The Warehouse Party!
Tom Tom Club
NEW DATE:   Friday, February 12th
Fairfield Theatre Company
Tom Tom Club

Tom Tom Club hasn't performed together in over two years and they are making their BIG return to the new stage at the Fairfield Theatre's WAREHOUSE.

Originally established as a side project from Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club comprised a loose aggregation of musicians, sound engineers, and artists of the Compass Point All Stars family, including Tina Weymouth's sisters and guitarist Adrian Belew, the latter of whom toured with Weymouth and Frantz in the expanded version of Talking Heads in 1980 and 1981. Named after the dancehall in the Bahamas where they rehearsed for the first time while on hiatus from Talking Heads in 1980, Tom Tom Club enjoyed early success in the dance club culture of the early 1980s with the hits "Genius of Love" and "Wordy Rappinghood," both of which were taken from their self-titled first album released on Sire and Warner Bros. Records in the US and Island Records in 1981.
