Thank you for your support. I invite you to read this month's newsletter to be informed of matters that concern you as well as community events in your area. I want to congratulate
Belen Jesuit Preparatory School on their first boys' soccer state championship with a 5-2 victory over Naples Gulf Coast on February 12. Congrats Wolverines!

District 12  welcomes Telemundo
 

On February 9 Cesar Conde, Chairman of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises speaks at the groundbreaking ceremony of their 450,000 square-foot global building, which will house between 1,100-1,300 employees and create 150 new jobs with average salary of $89,000. The facility will be located at 12200 NW 25th Street and is expected to be completed in early 2018. Welcome to District 12 NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises!

Safety barriers at child care facilities   
Commissioner Diaz is supporting  legislation for installation of safety barriers at child care facilities in Miami-Dade County. This item is scheduled for public hearing on March 15 at 2pm at the Unincorporated Municipal Service Area (UMSA) Committee. In 2012, Commissioner Diaz sponsored legislation requiring barriers at new shopping centers after two women were killed while sitting outside of a West Miami-Dade strip mall boutique after a vehicle crashed into them.  


Conversion of two-way roadways
Commissioner Diaz sponsored a resolution requiring the mayor or his designee to prepare a feasibility study regarding the conversion of certain two-way roadways to one-way roadways in order to alleviate traffic congestion in Miami-Dade County. The report is scheduled to be presented to the board in 180 days.   
Dade Days in Tallahassee 

Commissioner Diaz participated in Dade Days 2016 in Tallahassee from February 8-11. Commissioner Diaz speaks with Florida Senator Rene Garcia regarding county priorities for 2016, which include funding for the Underline, funding for 25st Viaduct and funding for the Military Museum.  
2nd Annual "Support Our Police" Rally and Ride

Many supporters joined Commissioner Diaz and Dade County PBA (Police Benevolent Association) at the 2nd annual "Support Our Police" Rally and Ride on February 21, at Tropical Park. The event  kicked off with a motorcycle ride from the PBA office at 2pm and concluded at Tropical Park with a sombering ceremony for the fallen police officers and their surviving family members. Miami-Dade Police Department of Aviation performed a fly-over at the end of the ceremony. The event was to show support for our police, but it was also a family event that included bounce houses, entertainment and food. Many supporters had the opportunity to take pictures with Miami Dolphin alumni players as well as take pictures of a blackhawk helicopter provided by the Department of Homeland Security.  All the proceeds from this event will benefit the PBA's Love Fund, Inc. Thank you to all the sponsors for making this community event a great success! 

Tribute to Montford Marines in honor of Black History Month

In honor of Black History Month, Commissioner Diaz, who served in the United States Marine Corps. and is the Chairman of the Military Affairs Board, joined Miami International Airport on February 12 to honor three Florida residents who are surviving members of the Montford Point Marines, the first African Americans to serve in the United States Marine Corps. Thank you for your service Private First Class Leroy Jones, Jr., Corporal George McIvory and Sergeant Allen L. Williams.

Projects in District 12

Roadway Resurfacing Project
The project is located along West Flagler Street from SW 107th Avenue to SW 102nd Avenue. This project will improve the roadway surface and driving conditions and includes milling, resurfacing, adjustment of valve boxes, manholes, ADA Ramps, connectors, pavement markings and signage. Project is expected to be completed in April 2016.

Sidewalk Improvement Project 
The project is located at SW 2nd Street from SW 129th Court to SW 132nd Avenue. This project consists of removal and replacement of damaged existing concrete sidewalk, construction of new concrete sidewalk, construction of new pedestrian access ramps, construction of curb and gutter, connectors and landings at bus stops and modification/restoration of driveway approaches. Project is expected to be completed in March 2016.  
Deadline to apply for 2016 Property Tax Exemptions is March 1 

If you are a property owner, please be aware March 1 is the deadline to apply for 2016 property tax exemptions. If you have questions or concerns, the Property Appraiser's Office is hosting several hands-on workshops at various locations throughout Miami-Dade County.

 On February 4, Commissioner Diaz and Commissioner Audrey Edmonson presented a certificate of appreciation Teresa Foxx, Chair of the Board of Directors for the Florida International Bankers Association.

New App for MIA Travelers

Traveling anytime soon? Miami International Airport is making it easier and smarter for travelers with MIA Airport Official 2.0. , the airport's mobile app. This mobile app can assit travelers with boarding passes, blue-dot navigation with estimated walk times, real-time flight updates, shopping and dining suggestions nearby.
MIA Airport Official 2.0 is available for free at the iPhone and Google Play app stores.
Free Zumba classes at North Trail Park

The Miami-Dade County Parks, as part of their health and fitness initiative, will be offering free "Zumba Gold" classes to residents age 55 and older at North Trail Park Community Center, 780 NW 127th Avenue.  "Zumba Gold" mingles fun and energetic music with lower impact movements to improve balance, flexibility, cardiovascular health and muscle conditioning. Miami Dade College offers free tax services

 

Starting February 1, Miami Dade College will offer free tax prep for low-income individuals, the elderly and non-English speakers who reside in Miami-Dade County through their Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. Last year, the program helped about 2,400 people file their income taxes. For more information and locations, view their website  
Open Enrollment for MDX Cash Back Toll Program in 2016
If you drive on SR 836/Dolphin Expressway, 112/Airport Expressway, SR 874/Don Shula Expressway, SR 878/Snapper Creek Expressway or SR 924/Gratigny Parkway you could be eligible for a refund by enrolling in their Cash Back Toll Dividened Program by March 31, 2016.

SR 836/826 Construction

On November 30, 2009, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six in partnership with the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) began a reconstruction project of the State Road (S.R.) 826 (Palmetto Expressway) and S.R. 836 (Dolphin Expressway) Interchange. Now that construction has begun, there will be many upcoming lane and ramp closures on the Dolphin Expressway.
