CARUSO AND THE SWORD is about a young bullied teen who discovers the sport of fencing and then must overcome the school bully, poor grades, low self-esteem, and parental objections to achieve his dream of qualifying to fence in the largest fencing tournament in the world - the Summer Nationals.

Hello,

I was once told by a reader that I was brave for submitting a fencing script to a screenwriting contest since writers usually submit scripts dealing with popular subjects.

Well, this month that "fencing script" advanced in not one but two contests. CARUSO AND THE SWORD placed in the most prestigious screenwriting contest in the world.

CARUSO AND THE SWORD was also a finalist in an in-kind grants contest. You can read more about the contests below.

You can also read about my ongoing frustration in raising funds and what you can do to help if you want to see the "fencing script" become a movie.

I would also appreciate it if you would take a brief 7 question survey. Let me know your interest in this film and your interest in helping get it made

We also completed a table read of the first 25 pages of the script. A table read is where actors sit around a table and read the script. It's done without directing the actors.

Thank you,

Paula Smith

FENCING SCRIPT A QUARTERFINALIST IN NICHOLL FELLOWSHIPS

CARUSO AND THE SWORD, written by Paula Smith, was one of only 351 scripts out of 6,730 entries that advanced to the Quarterfinal round in the prestigious Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting competition. The Nicholl Fellowships is a program of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

FENCING SCRIPT A FINALIST IN FROM THE HEART PRODUCTIONS GRANT CONTEST

CARUSO AND THE SWORD was a Finalist in the From the Heart Productions grant contest. From the Heart Productions is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) organization that awards annual in-kind grants to films that are "unique and make a contribution to society." The organization was started in 1992 by Carole Dean. There were 28 Finalists.  Carole said that in 20 years this is the only script she had received about fencing.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Raising funds has been a challenge and most people would have given up trying to get CARUSO AND THE SWORD filmed long ago.

There are no film studios or investors funding this project. When it gets made it's because the general public (you, your cousin, friends, and neighbors) helped turn the script into a film.

How you can help:

1. Make a tax-deductible donation of any amount from $1on up by check or online

2. "Like" the C.A.T.S. Facebook page and tell others about the project

3. Forward this email to friends

4. Take our brief 7 question survey

TABLE READING OF THE FIRST 25 PAGES

We did a table read of the first 25 pages of the script.  A table read is a reading of the script with actors sitting around a table and reading the script.  It is usually done to show  that the story flows well and the dialogue is good.  You can listen to an mp3 of the reading or watch the video by clicking here.
