The Plea The Plea by Steve Cavanagh
When David Child, a major client of a corrupt New York law firm, is arrested for murder, the FBI ask con-artist-turned-lawyer Eddie Flynn to secure David as his client and force him to testify against the firm. The FBI swears David is guilty as hell -- plus they have incriminating files on Eddie's wife. If Eddie can't or won't get David to hire him, she'll pay the price. Though the evidence overwhelmingly says that David killed his girlfriend, when Eddie meets David, he's convinced the man is innocent. With the FBI putting pressure on him to secure his client's guilty plea, Eddie has to find a way to prove Child's innocence while keeping his wife out of danger. Using his legal know-how, grifting talent, and some brilliant sleight of hand, Eddie must find the real killer before it's too late.

Science-Fiction & Fantasy
Annihilation Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer
Area X has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine, Edenic landscape; the second expedition ended in mass suicide; the third expedition in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another. The members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within weeks, all had died of cancer. In Annihilation, the first volume of Jeff VanderMeer's Southern Reach trilogy, we join the twelfth expedition. They arrive expecting the unexpected, and Area X delivers, but it's the surprises that came across the border with them and the secrets the expedition members are keeping from one another that change everything.

The Chalk Man The Chalk Man by C.J. Tudor
The Chalk Man is a creepy, dark, wonderful mystery. It moves back and forth seamlessly from 1986 when five 12-year-olds started out having a normal summer, to the present when those same five find themselves reliving that summer in ways they never imagined. Lies, misunderstandings, and 12-year-old feelings, jealousy, and pranks all play a role in creating the many twists and turns that make up the story of the chalk drawings -- drawings which started as a fun way for 12-year-olds to write each other messages in code, and ended up in death.

The Wife Between Us The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen
The Wife Between Us is psychological suspense at its best. The writing is so convincing that you will naturally make certain assumptions. But as the blurb for the book says, you should assume absolutely nothing. I lost count of how many times I was totally surprised by what I thought I knew, and even when the surprise ending was revealed there was still one last surprise. A story of love, deceit, betrayal, and sickness -- it is scary and troubling and stunning and amazing all rolled up into one of the best thrillers of the year.

St. Martin's Press - Release Date: 1/9/18 - Format: Hardcover - Price: $26.99

Two Girls Down Two Girls Down by Louisa Luna
Alice Vega is a seriously bad-ass bounty hunter from California who specializes in finding missing children. When 8-year-old Bailey and 10-year-old Kylie disappear from their mother's car while she runs into a store, Alice is hired by the girls' aunt to come to the small Pennsylvania town to help the overworked and understaffed police. Alice immediately convinces Max "Cap" Caplan to help her. Cap is a disgraced ex-police officer who is now a PI. Not only does Vega have extraordinary martial arts skills, but she also has the resources of a super hacker to get her any information she needs. Together they form a powerful team that can do things and go places the police can't. An easy readable writing style, a great storyline with a very unexpected ending, and really likeable characters who give the book an added layer of excitement and who I hope we see again make this a book you won't want to miss.

Need to Know Need to Know by Karen Cleveland
Vivian is a loving wife and mother of four. She adores her husband and will do anything for her family. She is also a top analyst in the Russia division of the CIA. Matt, Vivian's husband, is also devoted to his family and will do anything to protect them. He is also a Russian spy. Part of a sleeper cell that Vivian uncovers. I devoured this book. I didn't want to keep reading because I was afraid of what might happen, but I didn't want to quit because I had to know what happened. I dreaded coming to the end because I could not begin to imagine an ending that I would like. But oh boy what a surprise, and what an ending!

Behind Her Eyes Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough
Behind Her Eyes took me totally by surprise. From the beginning I knew it was a story of a very disturbed person, but which one was the sick one? I knew something happened in the past which was driving two of the main characters, and slowly I thought I was discovering the truth about the past -- but boy was I wrong. A very dark and eerie psychological thriller of love and obsession that you will not be able to put down until you discover the truth.

The Great Alone The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah
The Allbright family has barely managed to survive since Ernt returned from a prisoner of war camp in Viet Nam. 13-year-old Leni loves her mother Cora unconditionally, and she tries really hard to love her father, but she doesn't understand why her mother accepts the abuse and the cruelty her father dishes out when one of "his moods" comes on. In a last attempt to fit into society in a post Viet Nam era, the family moves to what is at the time the wilderness of Alaska. They are totally unprepared for what they are about to endure, but with the help of the few neighbors they have, they learn to overcome the harshest conditions imaginable. But they are still struggling to be the loving family they were before Viet Nam, as dark cruel winters cause Ernt's PTSD to get worse every year. The Great Alone is a beautifully written, remarkable story of what one family can endure and a story of the strength of the human body and the human spirit. It is tragic at times, heartbreaking at times, and beautiful at times. It is a story of cruel love, young love, and above all, a mother's love. It is the ultimate story of survival.

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
16-year-old Simon is gay, but he hasn't told anyone yet. Except for his secret penpal Blue, who's in the same boat, and who Simon has a major crush on. Then someone from school sees Simon's email, and uses it to blackmail Simon. Now Simon has to set up one of his best friends with his blackmailer or risk outing Blue.
