Dear Students, Parents, Teachers & Friends of Education,

Words aren't sufficient to express the gratitude for our community partners in the success of our 1st Annual Fill the Bowl lunch fundraiser held November 8th at both high school cafeterias benefitting Food 2 Kids Barrow.

Fill the Bowl provided sponsorships for 13 students. It takes $275.00 to sponsor one student for an entire school year, and Barrow County's currently serving 215 students with 80 identified students on a waiting list. Childhood hunger is a very real problem in our neighborhoods.

A big thank you goes to the Barrow County School System Nutrition Department and Cafeteria Managers, who planned, hosted, prepared and served the delicious soup & cornbread lunches for "Fill the Bowl."

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our community partners who helped sponsor this event by selling tickets, publicizing, and/or donating items for "Fill the Bowl-2016." They are the Winder Police Department, Winder Fire Department, Hill's Ace Hardware, Bethlehem First United Methodist Church, Barrow County Clerk's Office, Bank of the Ozarks-Winder, Statham, Auburn Branches, MAC Fundraising Solutions, Bethlehem Church, Brand Bank, Stansell & Petree Family Dentistry, BCSS Partner In Education Coordinators at each school, Nelson Sanders Photography, Perfect 10 Nails & Spa Salon, Southern Roots, Forge RX, Dunkin Donuts, Dog Grooming of Dacula & Winder, Longhorn Steakhouse, Curves of Winder, Corkies, Corner Bookstore, MVP Jewelers, Sweet Jasmine Antiques, Sims Academy Woodworking Students, Wayne & Pam Sharpton, Elise Binder for her handcrafted pottery, and Gwen Hill for her two homemade pound cakes.

Superintendent's Reception

In recognition of parent engagement month, the Barrow County School System held its third annual Superintendent's Title I Parent Reception at the new Russell Middle School. Attendees learned about parent engagement initiatives including Academic Parent Teacher Teams (APTT), a community free Wi-Fi initiative through a partnership with the Barrow County Chamber of Commerce and a new web site resource for parents. The new Barrow BOLD Parents web site is specifically designed to assist parents with ensuring their children are academically successful.

Superintendent Dr. Chris McMichael shared information about the state of the school system including the ever improving graduation rate, new construction, and other initiatives. Attendees were encouraged to ask questions or share concerns with the superintendent and other system level staff members. Questions and concerns that were voiced included topics such as technology use, safety, and school friendliness. For more information about how you can become involved with ensuring the success of students in the Barrow County School System, visit www.barrowbold.org.

Groundbreaking - Cultural Arts Venue Collaboration

The Barrow County School System and Barrow County Board of Commissioners are partnering on the development of the initial phase of a cultural arts venue to be located on the Sims Academy of Innovation and Technology campus on Austin Road.

The amphitheater as currently designed would consist of a five tiered lawn with concrete cap seating to accommodate 800 plus occupants, a 4,000 square foot stage with a structural
steel frame and metal roof shell, support rooms for the stage, a concession/restroom facility surrounded by a concrete plaza, and parking. This project, which is a part of the 2006 SPLOST referendum, is expected to be complete in the summer of 2017.
