ADVANCED STYLE

ADVANCED STYLE is a documentary that examines the lives of seven unique New Yorkers aged 62 to 95 whose eclectic personal style and vital spirit have guided their approach to aging. Director Lina Plioplyte follows these fashionable ladies' daily adventures of living in the city, capturing their most entertaining and poignant moments. From the instant that Cohen first meets these vibrant characters on the streets of New York, it is evident that they are destined for fame. From a glamorous 81-year-old dancer from the legendary Apollo
theater, to an 80-year-old owner of a storied boutique on the Upper West Side with a penchant for over-the-top accessories, to a 93-year-old West Village artist known for her colorful ensembles and iconic red eyelashes crafted from her own hair, these ladies offer their own unique perspective on overcoming life's obstacles with style and grace, proving that age is merely a state a mind. Advanced Style paints colorful and intimate portraits of independent, stylish women who are challenging conventional ideas about beauty, growing old, and Western culture's increasing obsession with youth.

Director Lina Plioplyte and street style photographer Ari Seth Cohen will be at the Music Hall for Q&A's on opening weekend: after the 7:20 PM screening on Friday, October 17 and after the 5 and 7:20 PM screenings on Saturday, October 18.

Pick of the Week

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival, the gripping drama Whiplash stars Miles Teller (The Spectacular Now) as Andrew Neiman, a 19-year-old jazz drummer determined to rise to the top of the country's most elite music conservatory. One night, Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons), a conductor equally known for his talent for teaching as he is for the terrifying method of his instruction, discovers Andrew practicing the drums, and the next day requests that he be transferred into his band. At first, Andrew is an "alternate," confined to turning the pages of the "core" drummer, but at the band's next competition, the core drummer's sheet music is misplaced and Andrew gets the opportunity to play. Though the act further alienates him from his fellow musicians, the band nonetheless wins the competition, and he seems poised to become Fletcher's new "favorite son." Andrew's maniacal effort to achieve perfection is further fueled by Fletcher's psychological brinksmanship. The nearer to perfection Andrew gets, the narrower his circle of intimates becomes until he is left only with Fletcher-and even that relationship is jeopardized by the ferocity of Andrew's ambitions. A journey that can be seen alternately as a descent into madness or an ascent to greatness comes to a crescendo on the biggest platform for Andrew's talents-the unforgiving stage of Carnegie Hall.

Star Miles Teller will appear in person on Saturday, October 18 for a Q&A after the7:30pm show.

Los Angeles Filmforum presents
Makino Takashi: Entering a Noisy Cosmos

At the Spielberg Theatre at the Egyptian, 6712 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles CA 90028

Makino Takashi in person from Japan!

Among Japan's most prolific and adventurous filmmakers, Takashi Makino is known for hallucinatory, non-linear films that harness techniques from the twin media of film and video, treating both image and sound with equal importance. "Makino Takashi's immersive live media experiences are a transcendence into 'physical unconsciousness.' Hallucinatory and experiential, Takashi creates abstract cinematic worlds immersing the viewer like a grain of emulsion free falling in the corporeality of image forming materials" (Unconscious Archives, London). Often described as being at the forefront of Japanese experimental filmmaking, Takashi himself generally shies from the term "experimental." Rather, his influences include the multiple exposure techniques of 1920s French Surrealist films and a near-death experience at the age of five during which he envisioned "a place filled with lights more brilliant than any image I had ever seen." Takashi's work evolves as he attempts to find the ideal film, "an unshaped, organic, lump-like film that links with the consciousness and mental state of the viewersand never ceases to change."

Tonight he presents Space Noise 3D, an immersive live cinema work for 16mm and video projectors, live soundtrack, and 3D glasses, giving a physical presence to the images beyond the screen. The work is preceded by three short films, two featuring the music of Jim O'Rourke.  Cinema and live performance that will fill your senses.

Tickets: $10 general admission; $6 students (with ID)/seniors; free for Filmforum members.

GIUSEPPE MAKES A MOVIE

While the rest of America slept, DIY filmmaker/musician Giuseppe Andrews (a one-time teen actor in Independence Day and Detroit Rock City) has made over 30 experimental features with titles like Doily's Summer of Freak Occurrences, Trailer Town, Utopia Blues and Touch Me in the Morning. Set in some demented alternate universe (i.e. Ventura, California), they are populated by real-life alcoholics and drug addicts, trash-talking senior citizens and trailer park residents dressed in cow outfits and costume-shop wigs, acting out booze-fueled vignettes of severe psychosis filtered through Giuseppe's John Waters-meets-Harmony Korine-meets-Werner Herzog sensibility. Director Adam Rifkin (Look, The Dark Backward) creates a wildly surreal, outrageously funny and strangely touching portrait of a truly Outsider Artist inhabiting a world few of us even know exists, as he follows Giuseppe and his endearing yet seriously impaired troupe on the production of his latest 2-day opus, Garbanzo Gas, starring Vietnam Ron as a Cow given a weekend reprieve from the slaughterhouse at the local motel,

Director Adam Rifkin, producer Mike Plante and actor Miles Dougal will appear in person on Friday, October 17 for a Q&A after the 7:30pm show and to introduce the 9:35pm show. Director Adam Rifkin and producer Mike Plante will appear in person on Saturday, October 18 for a Q&A after the 7:30pm show and to introduce the 9:35pm show.
