Apex Fun Run is Here!

We are so excited to announce that our school will be participating in the Apex Fun Run this year as our 1st semester fundraiser! The Apex program will be with our students September 4-14 as we raise funds that allow the Fountain Hills PTO to provide us with programs and purchases such as $200 for every teacher's classroom, the morning lab, STEM and technology materials/equipment, teacher professional development, and more! Please look in your child's folder and for emails that will be sent to you during the next two weeks.

Apex Fun Run is an interactive leadership program that helps schools all over the country raise money while promoting leadership, good character, and fitness. This year's theme is Apex Strong! Students will join the Apex Squad on an exciting journey as they learn what it means to be strong as a team.

During the Apex Fun Run program, students are challenged to get pledges for the laps they will run on Fun Run day to help our school. Students will run for 30 minutes and will run an average of 26-36 laps around the Apex Raceway. The maximum amount of laps is 36 and each lap is 1/16th of a mile. Through Apex's top-notch online pledging system, sponsors can pledge $1/lap, $2/lap, $5/lap, or any other amount for students and can pledge from anywhere in the world!

Thank you again for your continued support of McDowell Mountain Elementary and we are excited to begin this journey with you!  Please enjoy some highlights from our September 4 kick-off assembly with Rockstar Rick and his friends below!

Kindergarten Color Days

Every year we celebrate and help our kindergarten students master their  colors with Kindergarten Color Days.  So far we shared photos of students and staff dressed in red on August 20, orange on August 21, and yellow on August 22.  Below are photos of the other color days: green on August 23, blue (Go Falcons!) on August 24, purple on August 27, pink on August 28, brown on August 29, black and white on August 29, and rainbow on August 30.  It was a great way to end the first month of school!

Introducing Our 2018-2019 Student Council!

MMES's student council is comprised of two representatives from every 2nd and 3rd grade class.  Under the guidance of sponsor Ms. Krause, student council helps plan activities for the school, votes on programs such as "dog tag" awards, and takes part in service projects such as recycling and other school and community service.

All 2nd and 3rd grade students and teachers selected their class representatives during the week of August 20-24.  Congratulations to the following 2018-2019 Student Council members:
201: Lillia Hewes & Kaitlyn LeDrew
202: Sawyer Hoid & Levi Lara
203: Margo Sampson & Claire Stumpf
204: Gia Ivie & Isaiah Stephens
301: Kensie Jibben & Summerlyn Miller

Bobby's Thoughts from August 30, 2018

What a fun week I had at school this week! To begin the week we continued to dress with the color of the day to help my kindergarten friends. Today, of course, I came dressed as the daily color... BLACK and WHITE! My mom said I've got those colors covered! I'm so glad to be able to help my friends.

Today was THE best day by far.

Deputies Brooks and Miller came to visit with the second graders in the library. I thought their job was to find bad guys, but I found out that they are here to keep ME safe! That makes me feel good on the inside knowing that we have two special friends that are here just for everyone at our school.

They also spoke about our recent lock down practice. In kindergarten, Deputy Miller learned you have to be "as quiet as a turtle"! A turtle? Well, I guess turtles are pretty quiet. We also learned that we were to NEVER open a door for ANYONE... that included my mom! Deputy Brooks told us that all the teachers, staff, and others who are supposed to be in our school have keys. If they forget their keys, they can walk around to the front office and Ms. Lynn and Ms. Cindy will let them inside. We are to NEVER open the doors!

Last week, Muffin came home really, really tired. I told her she has to pace herself and not run everywhere in the building. First, because it's the rule, to never run in the building and the other is well... you're going to be really tired at the end of the day. That's why I take my time getting around the building. I heard she did a good job. I think I need to come with her one day just to watch and see for myself.

I hope my friends do something extra fun this weekend but to always be safe.

Oh, and a big thanks to Deputy Brooks and Miller for the cool stickers they gave to all of us! I am now a real "Junior Deputy" for Maricopa County Sheriff's Department. I will wear my badge with pride!

Ballet Under the Stars

Many of our 3rd graders have been practicing on Wednesdays after school and will perform with Ballet Arizona at Ballet Under the Stars, a free performance at Fountain Park on Thursday, September 13 at 7:00 p.m. There are only four Ballet Under the Stars performances in Arizona and Fountain Hills is one of them! Great job to our 3rd graders and music teacher, Mrs. Perkins who has been organizing and supervising the practices!  Ballet Arizona even featured our students on their Facebook page at  www.facebook.com/balletaz/
