Reminder: New Recycling Ordinance

The new Chicago Recycling ordinance took effect on January 1st and mandates that property owners of multi-unit residential, office and commercial establishments provide source-separated, single stream recycling (separating recyclable materials from waste before the point of collection). Property owners are also responsible for educating tenants about the changes by posting signage, providing adequate carts and sending written notices.

The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation will handle enforcement of the ordinance that includes a 30-day warning period and graduated penalties for non-compliance after an inspection. Penalties include; $500-$1,000 (first offense); $1,000-$2,500 (second offense within 12-month period); and $2,500-$5,000 (third and each subsequent violation occurring within 12-months of the most recent violation).

For more information on recycling in Chicago visit here or call 312-744-2413.

Utility Scam Alert

ComEd is warning of activity where customers receive an unsolicited call from an individual alleging to be a utility representative. The scammer warns that the customer's service will be disconnected if the customer fails to make a payment - usually within a short time-frame.

Helpful tips to avoid scams include:
  • Utility representatives will never ask or require customers to purchase a prepaid debit card to avoid disconnection.
  • Customers can make payments online, by phone, automatic bank draft, mail or in person.
  • Customers with delinquent accounts receive an advance disconnection notification with month billing, never a notification one hour before disconnection.
  • If you suspect a scam, hang up and call the police and then your local utility. Never dial the phone number the scammers provide.
If you believe you've been the target of a phone scam we urge you to contact the Illinois Attorney General's office at 1-800-386-5438 or visit the website here.
