Meet Mary!

Hello there, folks! My name is Mary and I'm the newest addition to the LotFotL family. I arrived here by way of Carroll University in Waukesha where I studied sociology with a sustainability emphasis. As a sociology major, I studied a lot of social problems and was very troubled by the direction our world is headed in. To combat various social issues and satisfy my drive to help people, I made the re-creation of the food system my life goal. I am a firm believer that food is healthcare and am honored to work somewhere where my belief is shared. My days on the farm are spent doing a little bit of everything from harvesting to transplanting to office work. In my free time I love to hike, read great books (currently: Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl), listen to music (anything from Bach to Tool, but The Beatles will always have a special place in my heart), and dance, of course.  I'm looking forward to a great season and meeting a lot of awesome people! And, "you may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one."

P.S. A super random fact about me is that I have an extra bone in my body that couldn't decide if it wanted to be spine or pelvis.

My mom, brother, and I before my graduation ceremony.

The Red Oak (Lettuce)
Round Up

Red Oak Lettuce features a mild, but sweet taste and delicate leaves. This lettuce is high in Vitamins A and C, folate, and contains some iron. It is best stored in plastic and refrigerated; be sure to rinse before use. Fun fact: this lettuce (and other similar lettuces) are served by Chinese families during birthdays and other celebrations as a symbol of good luck.

Bok Choy Bananza

Bok Choy, also known as pak choi or "white vegetable/cabbage," is an Asian lettuce commonly used in soups or stir-fry. It features a light, sweet flavor and crisp texture. This low-calorie lettuce is high in Vitamins A and C and also features lots of calcium. To store, wrap heads in paper towels and store in your fridge's crisper drawer for about a week.

The dirt on the farm: The Times they are a Changin'

This will make season four here on the property where we are currently farming.  Looking at our farm today compared to year one out here, one would think we were a different farm. The permanent structures are the same, but everything else has evolved into something more efficient, or something bigger to accommodate our growth.  Some things have grown completely obsolete and have been hauled away, torn down, or up-cycled into something else.  The business itself has matured and not only grown in size, but blossomed as Tim, April and our team become more experienced and better farmers. None of this would have happened if we were unwilling  to recognize a need for change and have a willingness to bend.  Our vision for something bigger and better drives us here on this farm. It's our part in the chorus that's screaming for change in our current food system and beyond.

People support a CSA for many reasons.  The desire for fresher food.  To support Local. To open their eyes to new foods.  To teach their kids about where food comes from.  All of which are conscious choices to do something different or new with food; to step away from the mindless purchase of food from a store where it seemingly just grew right there on the shelf, already in its package.  Our members are pioneers and soldiers in the food world, driving an inevitable change with a hope that it will be a good one.

Thank you for choosing LotFotL. Thank you for being part of this change.
