"Hark, I hear a robin calling!
List, the wind is from the south!
And the orchard-bloom is falling
Sweet as kisses on the mouth.

In the dreamy vale of beeches
Fair and faint is woven mist,
And the river's orient reaches
Are the palest amethyst.

Every limpid brook is singing
Of the lure of April days;
Every piney glen is ringing
With the maddest roundelays.

Come and let us seek together
Springtime lore of daffodils,
Giving to the golden weather
Greeting on the sun-warm hills."

Stewardship

Parkway Bog Turtles Will be Better Protected

Bog Turtle Thanks to the generosity of the Clabough Foundation, many of the parkway's federally endangered bog turtles will now be permanently marked for tracking and identification with PIT tags (passive infrared transponders).

The Clabough Foundation has fully funded the Blue Ridge Parkway's bog turtle project for 2013 with a generous grant of $1,500. One of the goals of the Clabough Foundation is to promote and improve the conservancy and stewardship of the natural resources in the High Country of North Carolina, and we are thankful that they have funded this project. You can find out more about this project and its benefits on our website.

We have many other important projects for 2013 that still need your help to make them a reality. Will you consider a donation for one of these worthwhile projects today?

To see the full list and find out more information, please visit www.brpfoundation.org/CurrentProjects. To help make these projects a reality, please visit www.brpfoundation.org/Donate.

Water Tower Boys

Here are two great opportunities to get involved with the Blue Ridge Music Center at Milepost 213 this summer!

Sign up for the Blue Ridge Music Center's e-news - you'll find out about the upcoming concerts and other information. While we will be promoting the concerts in our e-news, their newsletter will give you more timely and in-depth information about the bands that are playing and other special events.

Sign up to be a volunteer at the music center. The Blue Ridge Music Center always welcomes new volunteers who enjoy music, talking to new visitors and helping the local community. There are many light duties to choose from and you can choose the hours and days too. If you'd like more info or would like to be considered for our crew of our enthusiastic volunteers please send an email to info@blueridgemusiccenter.org or call at (276) 236-5309 x112. A training session for 2013 volunteers is scheduled for Saturday, May 11th.

Thank You North Carolina License Plate Holders!

NC Blue Ridge Parkway Specialty Plate

Thanks to the thousands of North Carolina car and motorcycle owners who proudly display the Blue Ridge Parkway Specialty Plate. Your support of the Parkway through this program allows us to fund over $500,000 of important Parkway projects and programs each year.

Whether you have a NC specialty plate or not, don't forget to register for our annual drawing for a luxury 2-night stay on the Parkway. Last year's winner, Mary Price, is glad she did! Mary's grandson learned of the contest through our Facebook page and suggested she enter...and a few months later, we presented Mary with a certificate for a 2-night stay at the Mast Farm Inn, a $50 gift certificate for their restaurant Simplicity and a $100 gift certificate for Mast General Store. Congratulations Mary, and enjoy your trip to the High Country!

We are still working hard in the NC legislature to retain our full-color specialty license plates, which are due to be discontinued in 2015.  You can find out more about this issue on our website and stay up-to-date by following us on Facebook.

Sequestration Impacts Facility Openings
on the Blue Ridge Parkway

Blue Ridge Parkway managers are beginning the process of implementing the park's plan to reduce costs as required by the recent sequester. Like every park in the National Park system, the Parkway was required to prepare a proposed plan for reducing the operating budget by 5% from 2012 levels. This cut amounts to $784,000. The plan outlines cuts to staff, training, travel and programs; these cuts reflect decisions that balance protection of park resources with visitor safety and services.

The full 2013 facility schedule has been announced with some partial closings and delayed opening dates. The following Parkway facilities, however, are slated to remain closed for the 2013 visitor season:
  • Otter Creek Campground, MP 60.8
  • James River Visitor Center & Picnic Area, MP 63.6
  • Roanoke Mountain Campground, MP 120.4 (Sunday afternoon Mountain Music programs are expected to continue)
  • Smart View Picnic Area, MP 154.5
  • Rocky Knob Visitor Center, MP 169
  • Doughton Park Picnic Area, MP 241.1
  • Jeffress Park Picnic Area, MP 271.9
  • Crabtree Falls Campground, MP 339.5
  • Crabtree Falls Visitor Center, MP 340.2
Stay updated for any changes to the opening and closing dates by following us on Facebook.
