What's the Author's Purpose
Grade Range: 3-5, 6-8
 When students can identify whether an author's purpose for writing a text is to inform, persuade, entertain, or describe, they are better equipped to evaluate its content as they make inferences and draw conclusions. In this lesson plan, using a 2-column chart, students scaffold their thinking and draw conclusions about the author's purpose.

Dinosaur Wars

 In the late 19th century, paleontologists Edward Cope and O.C. Marsh uncovered the remains of hundreds of prehistoric animals in the American West, including dozens of previously undiscovered dinosaur species. But the rivalry that developed between them would spiral out of control, permanently damaging their careers and threatening the future of American paleontology.  The Persuasion Map is an interactive graphic organizer that enables students to map out their arguments for a persuasive essay or debate. Students begin by determining their goal or thesis, then identify three reasons to support their argument and three facts or examples to validate each reason.
