Scholarships Now Available to Middle School Science Teachers
Professional Development
 Iowa Public Television is looking for middle school science teachers interested in a free online course. Through a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, 85 Iowa Middle School Science Teachers have the opportunity to take the course, "Global Climate Change Education."

Wisdom of Crowds
Grade Range: 6-8, 9-12
 In the early 1900s, British scientist Sir Francis Galton thought he was proving the ignorance of the masses when he noted that no one got the right answer at a country fair competition in which entrants were asked to guess the exact weight of an ox. What Galton failed to realize was that the median of all the guesses produced close to the right answer and showed the "wisdom of the crowd."

Energy Lab

 For something we use every day, energy is a pretty mysterious concept. This NOVA Lab investigates what energy is, how it can be converted into useful forms, and why some sources are running low. In our Research Challenge, you'll use scientific data to design renewable energy systems for cities across the U.S., and compete with others to see whose designs can produce the most power.

 What's the difference between hamburger meat from the store, and meat you grind at home? Both are composed of short muscle fibers and sticky proteins, but home ground beef allows you control over fat, flavor, and texture. It's the secret to the perfect burger.

Environmental Public Health
Grade Range: 3-6, 6-8
 The medical and technological advances of the past few centuries have helped improve human life on Earth, but technology has also had some unintended, harmful effects on human health and the health of other living things in our environment. This collection highlights these issues, examines how we are identifying the causes and effects of these health problems, and how public health works to improve conditions.
