Dr. Norman E. Borlaug's Legacy Provides Students with Educational Resources and Opportunities
Grades: 6-12

On March 25, 2014, the State of Iowa will celebrate a milestone with the official unveiling of the Dr. Norman E. Borlaug statue in National Statuary Hall at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. Appropriately, the date would have been Dr. Borlaug's 100th birthday and is also National Agriculture Day.

Dr. Borlaug of Cresco, Iowa, is known as the "Father of The Green Revolution" and his development of miracle wheat is credited with saving an estimated billion people around the world from hunger and starvation. He is the only American to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, the Congressional Gold Medal, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the National Medal of Science.

Watch the LIVE webcast of the Borlaug Statue Dedication Ceremony in Washington, D.C. Speaker of the House John Boehner, Iowa Governor Terry Branstad and other leaders will celebrate the life of Dr. Borlaug.

  • Tune in online at speaker.gov/live
  • 10 a.m. CDT (11 a.m. EDT) on Tues, March 25, 2014

The statue of Borlaug will be part of the National Statuary Hall Collection at the U.S. Capitol Building, where each state is represented by two statues of notable citizens. Borlaug will replace the statue of U.S. Senator James Harlan installed in 1910, which will be relocated to Mount Pleasant, Iowa. The second statue representing Iowa is of Governor Samuel Kirkwood, installed in 1913.

Find more information on this once-in-a-lifetime milestone for Iowans at iowaborlaugstatue.org.  You can also visit the State Historical Museum of Iowa in Des Moines on March 25 to watch the live webcast, see a smaller version of the statue, and tour a new exhibit of agricultural paintings by artist Walter Haskell Hinton.

The World Food Prize, which Norman Borlaug founded, has created a section of its website all about Dr. Borlaug. They are inviting students, teachers and others to celebrate his legacy by:

  • Posting to the interactive Borlaug Centennial Map with the answer to this question: In honor of Norman Borlaug's 100th birthday, what will you do to help fight hunger? Students can also read other people's responses. www.worldfoodprize.org/norm
  • Learning more about Dr. Borlaug: The above website also includes a timeline of Dr. Borlaug's life, ideas for how you can help fight hunger, videos about how Dr. Borlaug has inspired Iowans, and more.
  • Visiting The World Food Prize Hall of Laureates: Special events are planned all day on March 25, including children's storytime, meal packaging, cultural dances, artist talks, a documentary screening, a webcast of the statue ceremony, an international photography exhibit and new interactive educational exhibits about global agriculture. The World Food Prize and its exhibits are also open twice a week all year; all visits and events are free and open to the public. www.worldfoodprize.org/visit

Iowa Public Television continues its tradition of telling Iowa's stories with the premiere of a new documentary, Norman Borlaug: Journey to Statuary Hall.  The special follows an artistic and agricultural journey from the cornfields of Iowa to the marble halls of Congress. IPTV documents the creative journey of artist Benjamin Victor as he crafts a larger-than-life icon.

IPTV will be on hand when the story culminates in the statue's March 25 debut in Washington D.C.'s Statuary Hall, fittingly on the 100-year anniversary of Norman Borlaug's birth.

Norman Borlaug: Journey to Statuary Hall will air Tuesday, April 22 at 6:30 p.m. and Friday, April 25 at 8:30 p.m. on statewide Iowa Public Television. The full program will also be available online at Iptv.org.
