ART NEWS
7th and 8th Grade Art
This month, Pine Lake Prep would like to highlight what an amazing job the 8th grade Computer Generated Art class did on their comic book covers.  These covers were illustrated in pen and ink, then scanned into the computer and colored on Photoshop.   These works of art can be seen on the second floor art gallery in the Fine Arts Building in the window of room 201.  Please be sure to check them out.

Art 1 is wrapping up their first painting project, a "Creative Color Wheel."  Students created an original composition to showcase each of the 12 hues of the color wheel, all of which they mixed using only the three primary colors.

Drawing and Painting II students are beginning a unit on Social Commentary art, which explores how artwork can be used as a powerful advocacy and educational tool.  Each student has chosen a topic to bring more awareness to and will create an original artwork to educate their audience.

Advanced Art students have just completed an oil pastel project, depicting a trio of oranges in different states.

LS Art for February 2015

Lower School Art classes are focusing on the following:

The entire Lower School is collaborating on a sculpture they will be creating which will be on display during the Lower School Evening of the Arts on Tuesday, March 31st. The students are very excited!

Kindergarten is currently creating a piece of abstract artwork inspired by Joan Mir. Catalan painter Joan Mir combined abstract art with Surrealist fantasy to create his lithographs, murals, tapestries, and sculptures for public spaces.

First grade is learning about stained glass windows. We will explore artist that have created stained glass works of art.

Second grade is finishing up painting the abstract relief self portrait sculptures. The construction of these pieces has been quite a lesson about design and engineering. I can't wait to see the final pieces painted!

Third grade is creating cubist paintings inspired by the artist Pablo Picasso. We will be reading a fun story, When Pigasso met Mootisse, by Nina Laden to get our creative juices flowing.

Fourth grade is finishing up painting their abstract animal sculptures.

Fifth graders are learning about the expressionistic painter and art educator Alma Woodsey Thomas. They will be using paint chips (the kind you get from Lowes or Home Depot) to create their artwork. If anyone has extra paint chip samples please send them to me - Leslie Clegg in the Lower School. [email protected]

LS Music

LS Music is busy, busy, busy rolling out our recorder unit for 4th and 5th grades and celebrating the Magic of Mozart! Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on January 27, 1756 in Salzburg Austria and forever changed the world of music. We are also gearing up for our very first Opera Express performance of Hansel and Gretel by our very own Opera Carolina in March, and students are learning about the story, characters, voices, and glorious music that goes with this delightful fractured fairy tale. We are also composing our very own rhythms and melodies for TWO THOUSAND FIFTEEN and performing them on various instruments by grade level. Ask your K-5 student about their favorite things from music!
