Even though great wine regions often have marginal growing condition for grapes, we, unfortunately, live in one that's extremely marginal to produce good local wines. On the bright side, we are just north of the New York region of the Finger Lakes where they are having great success with many of the German and Alsace varieties. Riesling, in particular, is thriving there and even getting international recognition like this week's wine of the week.

Boundary Breaks Vineyard was started in 2008 with the philosophy of focusing on one thing and doing it well. Throughout their bottlings of Riesling there are stellar examples of what New York can do with this grape, especially the 198 Reserve which has delicious flavors of Granny smith apple and white peach with a minerality rarely found in the Riesling outside of Germany. This would be the perfect accompaniment to grilled sausages, cured meats, pate and either hard or soft cheeses.

"Another winner amidst Boundary Break's exciting new lineup of wines, the No. 198 Reserve is exuberantly spicy and floral, with a beautifully concentrated palate full of ripe peach and tangerine flavors. Brisk and bright with citrus acidity, it finishes elegantly, with hints of jasmine tea and honey." 90 Points, Wine Enthusiast

2011 Boundary Breaks Riesling No. 198 Reserve, Finger Lakes, New York
Regularly $19.99,  Special Offer Price $16.99

Cheese: Parmigiano-Reggiano Stravecchio, Parma, Italy - $19.99/lb

Parmigiano Stravecchio is aged three years, instead of the requisite 18 months, giving this cheese a more umami-rich flavor and slightly crystallized texture. Yes, it's divine grated on all your favorite dishes, but it's even better nibbled as is or with a glass of  Boundary Breaks Riesling. This hard Italian cow's milk cheese goes great with an off dry Riesling with the salty and sweet tastes playing off of each other. Enjoy!
