August 25, 2017
Greetings,

This Friday Update is brought to you by your Fire Chief, Glen Weeks. I appreciate this opportunity to call attention to a member of our community, resident and Reserve Firefighter, Charles Mallorca. Charles has been a member of the American Canyon Fire Protection District as a Reserve Firefighter since January 2006. He is an exemplary Reserve Firefighter and has been acknowledged by his peers for his dedication and excellence no less than three times as the District’s Firefighter of the Year in 2009, 2010 and 2013!

Charles seems to always be there when it counts and Saturday, August 5, 2017 at 10 pm is a perfect example. Charles responded to the fire station from home because he knew multiple emergency calls were coming in. When he arrived he realized the whole County was experiencing a surge of emergency calls, creating “Level 0” or no ambulances available. In cooperation with the County’s ambulance provider, American Medical Response, our District operates a special ambulance, referred to as a “surge” ambulance just in case the county-wide ambulance system is depleted by a surge of calls.

Charles immediately contacted Fire Captain Jamie Bryant, who was on scene of a cardiac emergency call, to ask if “Surge 11” was needed. The crew of Engine 11 was providing advance life support care for a heart attack victim and the patient needed to get to the hospital immediately. Charles promptly delivered the surge ambulance and District personnel transported the patient to the nearest emergency department without any delay. Charles’ dedication, initiative, and competence contributed (along with the rest of the team on Engine 11) to potentially saving the life of a citizen of the community.

We will be honoring Charles Mallorca this Tuesday at our Fire District Board Meeting, see below for more details.

On the Agenda...

The City Council, in their role as the Fire Protection District Board of Directors, will meet again next week, August 29th, at 6:30 PM at City Hall. At this meeting, the Board will honor Charles Mallorca for his actions on August 5th, as discussed above. They will hold a formal badge pinning ceremony for our newest firefighter, Euclid Abalos. Finally, the Board will consider approving a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to replace a heavy rescue apparatus.

Since our Last Update...

The City Council last met on August 15th. At the meeting, they heard an update from Parks and Recreation Director Creighton Wright about the status of Clarke Ranch master park plan. Your next chance to provide input into this park plan is September 25 at a meeting of the Parks and Community Services Commission. Watch for announcements if you want to attend and learn more. Also on the 15th, the City Council created a new Water Rate Advisory Committee to help with the coming water rate review. Watch your Friday Updates if you are interested in applying for this committee. Finally, the City Council heard a report about short-term vacation rentals in American Canyon.
