Are You a People-Pleaser?
Here's how you can stop being one...

Many of us are people-pleasers, both personally and professionally. We want to know...strike that...we need to know that our partners, our family members, our clients, our customers, our employers, our employees, etc., are pleased with us and happy with not just the job we're doing, but everything else about us, too. As a result, we end up lying to them and to ourselves... a lot! As this week's video points out, being a people-pleaser is an incredibly stressful way of life that can actually damage our relationships and our own wellbeing. But this state of mind may be easier to adjust than we think...
Don't Forget "First Friday" Tonight!
Come see what all the fuss is about. "First Friday" has become one of our members' favorite events in the past year. It's casual and fun with no speaker, agenda, or program. Simply put, it's an enjoyable way to end the work week on the first Friday of each month with fellow members, great food and drink, prizes, and more. May's host is Froehlich's Classic Corner , located at 501 Washington Street in Steubenville, and things get started this evening at 5 and run until 7.

Froehlich's will be offering half-priced appetizers (not including wings) and $.75 cents off beer, wine and other cocktails. Also featured is their All-You-Can-Eat Fried Cod dinner for only $12.99.
Grab These Sponsorships Before They are Gone

A limited number of sponsorships are still available for the Chamber's Annual Golf Classic on May 22nd at the Steubenville Country Club ,  including two "Hole In One" packages, several "Elite" door prizes, and a few corporate sponsorships.

Modern Marketing 101:
Enhancing Your Credibility Through Endorsed Videos
Last week, we linked to an article detailing several content-marketing strategies employers can use to reach a wider online audience, one of which was to "create compelling video content." Expanding on that idea this week, here's an article from IGV that gives four reasons why your business should seek video endorsements for your products. According to the article, "Endorsed videos are a positive way to create a partnership with a video brand, as well as network with other professionals utilizing this tool. More often than not, professionals utilizing endorsed video refer to their endorsement to find other videos related to their professions, therefore gaining further knowledge, ideas, or skill sets from the association of their endorsed video networking platform."

IGV also offers several incredibly useful and timely Social Media and Email Marketing Seminars & Workshops. You can check the list of seminars and workshops out here .

Here is a list of our previous Modern Marketing 101 installments for you to print, save, and add to your social-media marketing manual:

In-Demand Jobs in Ohio

Last week, we previewed In-Demand Jobs Week, which is taking place May 7-11th and serves as a statewide celebration of jobs, industries, and skills that are in-demand in our state. This week, we want to take a look at what are some of those jobs and how employers and job seekers can take advantage of this upcoming week.

Currently, there are 236 in-demand occupations across the state of Ohio. These occupations are defined as ones that provide a sustainable wage and a promising future based on the projected number of openings and growth. Additionally, they vary greatly in terms of level of education needed, on-the-job-training, and relevant work experience.

However, there is one common thread for all employers and that is they need qualified workers to fill these vacancies.

OhioMeansJobs has put together an easy-to-use search engine to help job seekers navigate occupations that are in-demand.

Interesting Times for the U.S.-China Relationship

We’ve all heard the old Chinese blessing – or is it a curse? – “May you live in interesting times.” This is certainly an interesting – and turbulent – time for the U.S.-China relationship.

There’s a vigorous debate about its future at the highest levels of government, and increasingly, among the American people. There are wide and varying viewpoints. So let me state what I think most of us can agree on.

First, the trade relationship – while far from perfect – has delivered substantial economic benefits to our economy, our businesses, and American consumers. Trade with China supports vast numbers of U.S. jobs, and China’s growing consumer market is critically important to U.S. exporters and investors. Most businesses would agree that, under the right conditions, the economic opportunities for American businesses in China are boundless.

Today in History

- May 4, 1979 -

The first time the phrase, "May the Fourth Be With You," was ever used publicly. According to The Verge , Great Britain's Conservative Party was still exultant after Margaret Thatcher's stunning victory to be the new Prime Minister. Her first official day in office was May 4th, and in a celebratory, albeit cheeky move, the Conservative Party purchased a half-page ad in the London Evening News that proclaimed, "May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations." Star Wars had just been released two years earlier, but already its cultural impact was pervasive. Eventually, the Internet, as it does with so many things, took over the date, and on May 4th, 2011, the first large organized celebration occurred at the Toronto Underground Cinema. Now, "Star Wars Day" is perpetrated internationally as a way for fans to indulge in their love of the planet's foremost fantasy franchise.

- $11,000,000 -

The budget for the first Star Wars movie, which was later renamed Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope . Its international box office has since eclipsed that minuscule budget for a grand total of $775,398,007.
