Meet our 2014/2015 Campaign Co-Chairs
Dr. Gary Scheumann and Dr. Jessica Pickard have been named co-chairs of the 2014-2015 United Way Campaign. They will be leading the countywide effort to raise funds for programs that support Health, Education, and Income in our community. "I have witnessed and understand the many benefits the United Way has on our communities and consider it a privilege to be part of this campaign," Dr. Scheumann said. He and Dr. Pickard will announce the campaign goal at this Friday's Campaign Breakfast at Serenity House. Read the full story here.
Volunteer Spotlight
As our staff and marketing committee began planning the inaugural Volunteer Spotlight feature, there was only one name on everyone's mind: Marilyn. A loyal volunteer of the United Way of DeKalb County since 1995, Marilyn Nelson has touched the lives of so many in this community. She serves on the Day of Caring committee, volunteers at many campaign events, answers phones, helps with mailings, and is always willing to help anywhere she is needed. "Marilyn gracefully, quietly and humbly works to make our community a better place to live. She has been a faithful supporter of United Way for many years, and we all consider it a privilege to work with her," said Julie Hill-Lauer, Executive Director.

When asked why she volunteers for the United Way, Marilyn replied "I think it's important what they do in the community. God told me that I am supposed to help other people, and I have to put my faith and trust in Him. And everyone here has been wonderful to work with." She encourages others to volunteer for the satisfaction they will get working with others and accomplishing a common goal.
A message from our agencies...

Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana helped 179 DeKalb County families last year. Because of United Way support and contributions from individuals like you, these families received 70 wheelchairs, hospital beds and other equipment items, 19 wigs, access to massage, nutrition and help paying for treatment costs. But most of all, they found a knowledgeable and compassionate companion on their cancer journey. Someone to encourage and support them-an advocate.

Thank you for helping your friends and neighbors. www.cancer-services.org.
