Dear Colleagues:

It took three months to plan it and six months to build it. Along the way there were hundreds of decisions made, and schedules and drawings to be reviewed, revised, and approved. We worried that our deadline might not be met, but the hard work and commitment of our many teams paid off and our new classrooms and "Student Commons" will be ready for Monday, May 7 -- the first day of the summer semester.

As one of the largest and most complex pre-construction projects for our new facility, the creation of these upgraded spaces will benefit our students in many ways. While one area is for classroom instruction and the other is designed for informal gatherings, they will both provide opportunities for learning and they will encourage students' interactions before, during, and after classes.

One specific aspect of these spaces that will expand learning opportunities is the way we have used technology. There are electronic displays and white boards mounted on many walls and columns in each area. Convenient support for personal mobile devices is available in every possible location to ensure full utilization of information from the college, the university, and the world beyond. These are areas where students can learn whenever and however they like.

An added value of these renovated spaces is the fact that the Student Commons includes the student computer room -- a.k.a., the Byte Wing, as well as a food preparation area with vending machines, and adjacent areas where students can study, take a break, or just "hang out." The student affairs office is also located nearby so that everything our students need is easily and conveniently accessible. Our hope is that the students will find more reasons to congregate in these spaces, improving interactions among classes, and creating an esprit de corps.

We already see that the success of these new spaces will be a result of the time and effort expended on consulting with classroom and educational technology experts, but much credit also goes to the advice and assistance provided by our students. They helped select the equipment that went into these spaces, and they suggested how things should be arranged, right down to the fabrics and colors of the furniture we purchased. After all, who is better qualified to make these decisions than the people who will spend the most time in these areas?

How pleased we are that our first big project -- the one we were able to "cut our teeth on" in getting ready for the new facility -- has met our expectations in so many ways. I can hardly wait for Monday to arrive!
