Five Pillars of Ministry & Leadership

At their 2016 retreat during the interim period, the Vestry organized our existing groups and committees for effective leadership and ministry, in order to be more clear about all that happens here at St. Peter's.

Banner will present St. Peter's news and events within the Five Pillars:

Worship Attendance

The Vestry thought it would be helpful for us to be aware of both giving and attendance as two of several ways to gauge participation in the life of St. Peter's. Note: The April numbers include Easter Day, when 523 people joined in worship.
Financial numbers coming soon.

Rogation Days
On Wednesday, May 24 , beginning at 6:30 pm in the Parish Hall, we will mark the ancient tradition of Rogation Days with a brief Skidaway Island specific liturgy, a time for sharing food and drink and the screening of the documentary film  Journey of the Universe.
Journey weaves science and humanities in a new way that allows for a comprehensive sense of mystery and awe to arise. This approach expands the human perspective beyond an anthropocentric worldview to one that values life's complexity and sees the role of humans as critical to the further flourishing of the Earth community.
Become a "Spiritual Sponge"
On Thursday mornings at 7:30 to 8 am, you can start your day with a quiet time of reflection, prayer and sacrament. Those who participate find it a 'place of refreshment, light, and peace'. As one participant put it, 'I can sit and be a kind of spiritual sponge and let the Word of God and the Holy Sacrament just fill me up'. This special Eucharist will continue through May, then break for the summer, and resume in September.
The Rev. Dr. Don Hands
Music Notes for Sunday, May 14
This Sunday's prelude, postlude and anthem are by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897).  He grew up in a Lutheran family, receiving his first musical training from his father.  From an early age Brahms loved to compose music.  His piano and violin teachers complained that he spent too much time writing music when he should be practicing. Read more about Brahms here.

At the ministration of communion
Kate Templeton will sing
"The Call" which is the fourth song of Five Mystical Songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958). A hymn version of "The Call" is found in The Hymnal 1982 at # 487. The text is by George Herbert (1593-1633) and relates to the appointed Gospel lesson for this Sunday. Read Kate's bio here.

Prayer Warriors Gathered: National Day of Prayer
The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for our nation. It was held at St. Peter's last Thursday evening, when nearly two hundred souls from our island, the Savannah mainland, and beyond, gathered to thank and worship our God and to pray for our country. Alleluia!

Wednesday Morning  Bible Study,10:30 am, in the Parlor.
We continue our New Testament study with Bart Ehrman's book  Jesus Before the Gospels, available through Amazon or in St. Peter's library. Ehrman's book details how the memories of the earliest followers of Christ, later to be called "Christians," were gathered to become our four gospels.
New members are always welcome; our goal is both to enlighten ourselves about scripture and to discover its place in our lives.

The Logos group will meet Monday, May 15th, at 6:30 pm in the Parlor.  The final chapter in Listening for God is "Credo," by Richard Rodriguez "a writer of unusual grace and clarity."

All are welcome to join in a lively discussion, sharing snacks and beverages, and deepening connections with fellow readers. Questions? Contact Cindy Howell

Diocesan-wide Evangelism Training
For those who shudder at the word "evangelism,"  three members of Presiding Bishop Michael Curry's staff will be in the diocese to offer training on Saturday, June 24, 1 - 4 pm. Even better for us: the training is right here at St. Peter's.

The training will cover an array of ways, all true to our Episcopal way of being, in which we can share our faith with those we already know both in person and on social media. One of the expressed desires of the congregation during the search process and one of the goals of the current vestry is to grow our church. Personal invitation is how that happens best.

Register at no-cost, for Saturday, June 24, here.

Interfaith Hospitality Network (a.k.a. Family Promise) is a network of congregations in the Savannah area that take turns hosting homeless families with children for a week at a time on a rotating basis.  St. Peter's next hosting week will be from this Sunday, May 14 to Sunday, May 21. If you would like to volunteer as a dinner host or an overnight host, shop for breakfast and lunch items, help set up or clean up, or simply learn more about the program, please call Jim Brawner at 912.692.0687 (home) or 912.257.9680 (cell).  Thanks!
Thanks to All Who Supported CropWalk!
A long walk on a beautiful day means much to those who have little. CropWalks are interfaith and international works to end hunger in impoverished areas of the world, one step at a time.
The Skidaway Island CropWalk on April 30 raised $2,900 . . .
thanks to St. Peter's youth and other parishioners who contributed their time and money to this Outreach effort.
At Last: St. Peter's Photo and Contact Directory!

Alphabetized stacks of directories are in the Parish Hall, labelled for each family. Please help the Parish save postage by picking up your copy when you are on site.

Our thanks to Betty Stout  who worked tirelessly to gather photos, lay them out and match faces with names, and staff members and volunteer receptionists who further worked on this project.
