Pfaff Announces for Second Term as Mayor

2013 is an election year for Fitchburg Leadership. All of the Alder seats and the Mayor's position will be up for election in 2013.  Mayor Pfaff has announced his candidacy for a second term. The deadline to file for candidacy for an alder position or a mayoral run is January 1st, 2013. The primary (if needed) will be February 19th and the election will be April 2nd. The Fitchburg Chamber will schedule a candidate's forum after the primary and invite membership to ask questions and get to know their candidates. For a list of your local leaders click here.

Fitchburg Launches Idling Reduction Campaign

You may have read about Fitchburg's Idling Reduction Campaign. The goal of this campaign is to reduce voluntary idling--idling when a vehicle is not being driven, like drive-thru lines, car washes, picking-up and dropping-off passengers and warming up the car. Idling is not an effective way to warm up today's engines even in cold weather. The best way to warm up your engine is to drive your vehicle. In fact, your vehicle will warm up faster if you drive it rather than idle it...and you'll get better gas mileage. After starting your car, wait a few seconds and then start out slower for the first minute or so.

Each day Americans waste approximately 3.8 million gallons of gasoline by voluntarily idling their cars.  For every gallon of gasoline used, a vehicle emits an average of 20 lbs of CO2. That translates to 13 million tons of CO2 produced annually from voluntary idling!(a)  The resulting pollutants linger in the environment and cause long-term health impairment and environmental damage.  Studies have shown that idling for over 10 seconds uses more gasoline and produces more CO2 emissions than restarting your engine.

What can you do? Participate. If it looks like you'll be waiting for more than 10 seconds, turn off your engine, and restart it when you're ready to move...and encourage others to do the same.
