TWO YEAR EXTENSION FOR THE FLEA!

A two-year extension of its license to operate The Flea Market at Eastern Market Sundays on the 300 block of 7th Street SE on Capitol Hill, was signed this week by Michael Berman, President of Diverse Markets Management (DMM)the D.C. company that manages the popular flea market.

The signing with the D.C. Department of General Services (DGS) effectively ended an effort, announced by a DGS employee in August, to seize the flea's business at the end of this month. Berman said, "This reversal is a direct result of a letter-writing and online petition campaign we had to launch to save the market from government control.
"And I'd like to thank the hundreds of people who participated in the campaign, which stated  'DC: DO WHAT'S RIGHT,'" Berman continued. "In particular local media interest generated for the story was very helpful as well."

Berman singled out Forest Hayes, Associate Director for Portfolio Management of DGS, who oversees Eastern Market and its license to the Flea Market, "for his quick response and support for the DGS extension."

The Flea Market at Eastern Market has been held Sundays in the Capitol Hill neighborhood outside the historic Eastern Market since 1984. It was developed by Tom Rall, a founding member in 2005 of DMM. Until mid-May it had operated for more than 20 years outside the adjacent Hine School, when it was relocated to the 7th Street location due to development.

"Rather than destroy a longstanding vibrant marketplace with rich cultural and artistic diversity, we appreciate that city leadership recognized the importance of continuing our enterprise," Berman concluded.

MONTHLY NIGHT MARKET THIS FRIDAY

Three new food options will be featured as the monthly MarketSW returns for its fifth installment 5 to 10 pm Friday, September 25 at Waterfront Station, 4th and M Streets, SW.

Also a DMM-managed event, Berman said "unfortunately we now have to turn some food vendors down" because of the success of the event in its initial year.  Food trucks participating will be Nom Nom Gourmet, a Southeast Asian specialist which returns from August; Sang on Wheels, with Laos/Asian fusion style cuisine; and Crepe Love, serving sweet and savory crepes from their truck. The latter two makes a first appearance at MarketSW along with The Capital Candy Jar, which will create giant S'mores on site, and join Migues Magnificent Mini-Donuts, returning from August.

DMM is collaborating with Art Whino impresario Shane Pomajambo, who is coordinating live painting of a shipping container on the site, and free art stations supplied for patrons and their families to join in the creativity. Live painters of the containers will be local artist   Akshun Jackson, who will be assisted by artists Toke and Khillacee. Also returning for Pomjambo's Blind Whino Arts Club section will be master cigar roller Arian Castenada and an enhanced outdoor bar presented by Sugar Rim Bar.

As an additional draw, live music will be presented on the stage. Christopher Brown's Bassapella will perform from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and DJ Eric Disco will return for another popular set from 8 to 10 p.m. He'll also spin some intermittent entertainment among Brown's breaks and a performance by Deborah Atkins Fitness Camp, aerobics between 5:30 & 6:15 p.m. Additional community outreach efforts include Zip Car and City Bikes. The Lex at Waterfront Station has signed on as a commercial sponsor for its nearby luxury apartments.

Among the 30 small businesses exhibiting at the market will be several popular returnees among an eclectic mix of crafts persons, artists, furniture designers, jewelers and importers from all over the world. See the entire array of exhibitors and activities!

11th ANNUAL DOWNTOWN HOLIDAY MARKET ON TRACK

Berman also reported the 2015 Downtown Holiday Market is "well under way."  Celebrating its eleventh year, this event boasts one of the most spectacular outdoor shopping environments in the region.  This year the Downtown Holiday Market (DHM) will operate for 27 consecutive days and will have 4 weekend dates.  It will open Friday, November 27, and will run continuously through Wednesday, December 23.  Hours will be from Noon to 8 pm each day.

The 11th Annual Downtown Holiday Market is located on the F Street sidewalk in front of the Smithsonian American Art Museum & National Portrait Gallery between 7th & 9th Streets, NW.

"Our jury completed application review last month and more than 150 exhibitors are being scheduled for the event," Berman said. "And Entertainment Director Donna Fletcher is already lining up a great musical program." Check the web site for regular updates.
