How Advocacy Saved the HTC
People throughout Florida were part of a movement that helped the Historic Tax Credit survive the most significant tax code rewrite in three decades

Yesterday we learned Congress has again confirmed that historic preservation makes fiscal sense, as the 20% HTC was included in the tax reform package that has now passed the House and Senate and is on its way to the president's desk for signature.
"All told, the results of the HTC campaign demonstrate the preservation community's ability to effect positive policy change in the face of adversity," said Stephanie Meeks, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. "The preservation movement's focused and effective advocacy ensured the HTC will continue to preserve our heritage and catalyze community revitalization for many years to come. Thank you for the countless hours you contributed to our effort to ensure that this critical preservation tool remains a pillar of federal historic preservation policy," Read more about this milestone from the Trust.
Our Executive Director Melissa Wyllie helped support the effort to protect the HTC, including speaking to reporters for publications around the nation. In a story that
ran in the Miami Herald
and other papers she said,
"
We have a limited supply of historic buildings and we want to make it viable economically to preserve them. From a development standpoint this tax credit can make the difference between preserving a building or starting from scratch, and potentially demolishing one."

My Florida Modern: Help Survey Your Community's Modern Architecture
University of Florida Statewide Mid-Century Modern Survey Aims to Identify "Lost" Resources

The Historic Preservation Program at the University of Florida is undertaking a
multi-tiered analysis of significant buildings, sites and landscapes of the Modern movement and the recent past (1945-1975), examined on a statewide level.
The My Florida Modern project seeks to understand and document the range and variety of design resources that give the state its unique architectural character and to provide a consistent framework to guide future preservation, land use and planning efforts. A list of Florida's 50 Flagship Designs, will highlight newly "discovered" buildings and landscapes that have not been recognized previously.
Florida Trust Board Member and Historic Preservation Program director said, "Modern and recent past resources are an important chapter in Florida's history, encompassing innovative ideas in architecture and planning, as well as places that demonstrate the influence and impact of the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Space Race and urban renewal. My Florida Modern purposefully throws a wide net over the state as a first-tier effort for recording historic modern structures and landscapes."

Florida Department of State Releases FY18-19 Grant Lists

Last week the Florida Department of State released the FY 2018 - 2019 Grant List, which includes the rankings for the Division of Historical Resources Special Category and Small Matching Grants.

Coconut Grove Playhouse, Miami, built 1927
Opened in 1927, Kiehnel and Elliott Architects designed the Playhouse in a flamboyant Mediterranean style with Spanish Baroque flourishes. This year marked the Playhouse's 10th listing on the Florida's 11 to Save.
There has seen much focus and community support for the Playhouse in 2017. At a Dec. 14 Miami City Commission meeting it was voted to give a third party 100 days to secure funding for a proposed preservation plan for the historic theater. That vote came after public outcry over the city's proposed development of the site that would include demolition of much of the original theater as well as the addition of a multi-level parking garage.
A Miami Today News story said, "It appears preservationists fighting to save the entire structure - including the 1,100-seat auditorium - have found powerful allies at the city and county level."

Grant Workshops
Department of State grants staff will be visiting communities in rural or underserved areas across Florida in 2018 to hold workshops to help citizens apply for and manage grants. Workshop staff will present opportunities for Cultural Affairs and Historical Resources grant programs and provide optional one-on-one consultations for participants. Cemetery Resource Protection Training
Florida Trust House, Tallahassee

The Florida Trust is excited to host its first Cemetery Resource Protection Training (CRPT) workshop in January! The workshop will begin with an introduction to cemeteries as outdoor museums and an overview of management plans. After lunch we will head out to the field and receive hands-on training at a local cemetery. Let us know if you are interested in joining us for this free event.

Florida Historic Preservation News
Great news for Apalachicola!
After a multi-year preservation battle, Apalachicola scored a big preservation win as CVS has withdrawn its proposal to build a large store in the city's historic district. The CVS would have required demolition of historic buildings and been directly across the street from the third-oldest cemetery in Florida. In October, the Florida Trust spoke at a
Planning & Zoning Board meeting advocating for the protection of the city's historic district. The P&Z Board voted at that meeting to reject plans for the store.

What a wonderful time of year! It is a time for reflection, remembrance and reconnecting. We have been focusing on that last one this year: reconnecting with you all, our community and preservationists around the state. This month we hosted our first Holiday Open House to kick off the holidays and showcase the Florida Trust House as a part of our community, we also held our first Volunteer Appreciation Lunch. This year we upgraded our Florida Trust Tree. We asked you to share holiday ornaments from a favorite historic spot, and you delivered! It has been a treat to learn more about these places and the people that made them possible.
