Breastfeeding: Good for Baby & Mom

There are many advantages for both mom and baby when mom breastfeeds. In addition to being the best source of nutrition and antibodies for newborns, breastfeeding forms a bond between a mom and baby that is not replicated by bottle feeding. In addition, mom will experience less post-pregnancy bleeding and lower her cancer risks.  Breastfeeding is also a great way to help shed those extra pregnancy pounds.

Floyd Valley Healthcare supports the choice of moms to breastfeed and is proud to offer services to help mom and dad with this important decision. We have three Certified Lactation Counselors available for our families. The Certified Lactation Counselor ®(CLC)   designation is the premier national certification in lactation management in the US. CLCs are required to pass core competencies and skill verification as well as pass an exam based on job task analysis.

A CLC can:
  • Assess breastfeeding using a multi-faceted approach
  • Provide support to breastfeeding moms and babies
  • Educate, counsel and support families with complex breastfeeding situations
  • Assist moms in successfully breastfeeding exclusively and for longer in baby's first year
This supportive service for moms wishing to breastfeed can be an invaluable source of information and education for a successful breastfeeding experience. Our Education Department (546-3401) offers a Breastfeeding Class taught by a CLC prior to birth, OB nurses offer postpartum support and appointments are available at the clinic to assist you as needed. If you wish to breastfeed, have questions about breastfeeding or are experiencing difficulties with breastfeeding, please contact us.
