New Year's Checklist

One of the best gifts of the new year is to give yourself a healthy 2017!  Floyd Valley Clinics has some tips for you:

  1. If you haven't had an annual exam, it is time to schedule one.  Many health issues can be discussed during your visit and recommendations made to help you get started on a healthier you.  If you are managing a chronic health condition, such as diabetes, it is especially important to review your medications and make sure your condition is under control.

  2. Make sure you know your numbers.  Whether during your physical or at a screening, make sure you know your blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose numbers.  These numbers help you understand your cardiac risks and move towards a more heart-healthy lifestyle.

  3. For women, make sure you are being seen for you annual pelvic exam.  Other screenings you should be aware of are a Dexascan (baseline is dependent on age and fracture/family history) and mammogram (baseline is 40 years old or earlier with family history of breast cancer).

  4. For men, it is important for you to get a prostate exam at age 50, or earlier if there is a family history of prostate issues.

  5. Everyone should be talking to your healthcare providers about a colonoscopy.  Your first screening should be at age 50, unless there is a history of colon cancer in your family.

As you can see, many screenings are dependent on family and health history.  Scheduling your annual physical provides the time to make a health plan specific to your needs.  Small steps like eating well, exercising and regular visits with your doctor can help you get on the path to better health.
