Tired of Being Tired?

Have you ever been told that you:
  • stop breathing, gasp or snort in your sleep
  • snore loudly and frequently
or find that you:
  • wake up sleepy or unrested
  • have headaches in the morning
  • feel very sleepy during the day
  • feel cranky
  • have trouble focusing
If any of these statements sound like you, please make an appointment with your healthcare provider and ask about sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a condition in which your breathing stops many times as you sleep and, if left untreated, can lead to serious health problems. The National Sleep Foundation estimates that 1 in every 7 Americans are affected by sleep apnea.

Your sleep study can be scheduled right in Le Mars. Floyd Valley Healthcare has an ACHC (Accreditation Commission for Health Care) certified sleep program in partnership with Precision Diagnostic Services (PDS) from Fargo, ND. As part of the recent remodel, FVH now has two private sleep rooms complete with therapeutic pillow top beds to make sure you are comfortable during your test. Rooms are also equipped with home comforts such as televisions and fridges as you relax prior to your test.
Give It a Shot

Immunizations stop disease in its tracks, preventing illness and saving millions of lives every year. Vaccines give you the power to protect yourself and those around you from getting certain diseases. Diseases are becoming rare due to vaccinations, but until we eliminate disease, it is important for people of all ages to stay up-to-date on all of their shots.

For students enrolling in 7th or 12th grades, there is a new vaccination requirement that needs to be completed prior to the 2017-2018 school year.  This change for the meningococcal (A, C, W, Y) vaccine includes:

  • one-time dose if received on or after 10 years of age for students in grades 7 and above, if born after September 15, 2004;

  • two doses of meningococcal vaccine with 1 dose received on or after 16 years of age for students in grade 12, if born after September 15, 1999; or

  • one dose if received when students are 16 years-of-age or older.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Food and Drug Administration take many steps to make sure vaccines are very safe. Take the time to make sure you and those around you have received all the necessary vaccinations by talking with your healthcare provider. By making sure your vaccinations are up-to-date, you can help prevent harmful disease from affecting you and your family.

If you have questions about immunizations, call your healthcare provider directly or call Floyd Valley Community Health at (712) 546-3335.

When Disaster Strikes

On June 20th at 11:30 a.m., Plymouth County was struck with a natural disaster that rendered part of Le Mars without power, including Floyd Valley Healthcare.  In the next few minutes, word of an explosion downtown came with mass injuries expected to be transported to the hospital.  Before reading too much farther, you may be relieved to know that this really did not occur but was the disaster scenario being discussed on that day at FVH.

During the tabletop drill, staff set up incident command and department leaders and staff gathered to talk, step by step, through what would occur as this scenario progressed.  Each department had the chance to discuss how they were prepared to handle the influx of trauma patients, walking wounded, families, staff and press.  Additional discussions included backup power, supplies, essentials (food and water), collaboration with community partners and recovery.

In addition to the normal work done at Floyd Valley Healthcare, we are always looking ahead and preparing for situations that could occur in our area.  Our rapid response means that our patients and those needing us are getting the care required in emergency situations.
