Butt Seriously, Get a Colonoscopy!

According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women in the United States and the second leading cause in men. It is expected to cause over 50,000 deaths during 2017.

The mortality rate from colorectal cancer has been dropping in both men and women for several decades. Colorectal polyps are now being found more often by screening and are removed before they can develop into cancers or are being found earlier when the disease is easier to treat. As a result, there are now more than 1 million survivors of colorectal cancer in the United States.

At Floyd Valley Healthcare, we have four general surgeons that perform colonoscopies throughout the week in the new Surgery Center. The endoscopy suite is a comfortable environment for the patient with recovery in a private room. Families are invited to relax in the dedicated surgery waiting room while the patient is in good hands with the experienced staff.

If you are over 50 or have a family history of colorectal cancer, please talk to your healthcare provider about a colonoscopy. We know it is not an easy discussion, but it just may save your life! You may also call Floyd Valley Surgery at (712) 546-3332 if you have questions.
Skin Is In
Skin is the largest of all the human organs; it protects the body from harmful environments including a variety of infections. Sometimes there is an opening in our skin that needs medical attention. Wounds, which may range from minor to serious, require the attention of health care providers with the specialized knowledge, skill and experience to treat them effectively. Wounds can take time and appropriate attention to heal.  In addition to caring for wounds, our WOC (Wound Ostomy Clinic) nurses also can also perform feeding tube and ostomy care including changing and education.

With your physician's referral, Floyd Valley WOC  nurses help patients with chronic and acute wounds caused by:
Treatments
  • Compression wrapping
  • Debridement
  • Feeding tube therapy (changing and care)
  • Ostomy care (changing and education)
  • Pressure relief appliances such as mattresses, cushions, heel protectors, etc.
  • Specialized dressings
  • Topical medications
  • Cellular tissue products
  • Negative pressure vacuum assisted closure
For more information on the WOC Department, please call 546-3491. If you are having issues with wound healing, need ostomy care or have a feeding tube, please see your healthcare provider and ask for a referral to the Floyd Valley WOC nurses.
Your Donations Make a Difference
  The new MRI suite
At the outset of this new fundraising season, the Floyd Valley Foundation cannot go without celebration of the past year's achievements and projects completed. Because of you, our loyal donors, Floyd Valley Healthcare has been able to grow and enhance the services for patients in many significant ways. Just look what your gifts have done this past year:
Your response to the North Addition Capital Campaign in 2012 allowed the second phase of the internal hospital renovation with the completion of the new radiology suite, new private patient rooms, and other general patient waiting areas. Your patience and support through all of these transitions is very much appreciated.
Proceeds from the annual golf tournament and other community donations resulted in a new neopuff (a machine to help newborns with respiratory distress), toddler beds and bassinettes to help better serve our young patients.
Over $92,000 in community and private donations helped to complete the Emergency Department renovation. This renovation is expected to be finalized in March.  We are excited to be serving patients in a much more efficient environment.
We cannot do this without you. With your gifts we will continue to expand and improve facilities and healthcare needs for the communities we serve. Thank you for the support you give us. Your commitment to Floyd Valley Healthcare does not go unnoticed.
Keep in mind that there are many ways you can give, including cash gifts, gift annuities, gifts of life insurance, planned giving and estate giving. If you have questions about the Floyd Valley Foundation or ways you can help, please contact Amy Harnack, Foundation Manager, at (712) 546-3348.
